Examples
Minghao + Ocean Vuong
The most beautiful part of your body
is where it's headed. & remember,
loneliness is still time spent
with the world.
Ocean Vuong - night sky with exit wounds
Hoshi/Anyone; "Beauty is terror"
Thinking about these two quotes together and the idea of on/off-stage personas:
"Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful we tremble before it. And what could be more terrifying or beautiful, to the Greeks to to our own, than to lose control completely?" - Donna Tartt, the Secret Histories
"I am calm in everyday life but when I put on my in-ear device and step on stage, I can feel the tension and hear the cheers getting louder as the music gets louder. When the staff tells me it's time to step on stage, I feel something boil inside me. I feel it steaming inside and I think I have to give a burst of something, spill what is inside me." - Hoshi in Hit the Road Ep. 04
Any ship; "It's been so many years"
Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
This is old Tom Frost
And I am calling long distance
Don't worry 'bout the cost.
'Cause it's been forty years or more
Now Martha please recall
Meet me out for coffee
Where we'll talk about it all.
Tom Watts - Martha

It’s cold out, and it reminds Vernon of him.
Everything seems to remind Vernon of him these days, whether it’s the airy giggle heard in the back of a bookstore or the piping hot cup he picks up at their favorite coffee shop, feeling empty without a second one to occupy his other hand.
It’s been a couple months now, and his apartment is as good as bare. He dumped the rest of his unclaimed things, donated them to thrift stores or threw them in the trash when he was feeling particularly resentful. Vernon hates being in his apartment for things other than sleep, when it still smells like him and Vernon swears he can hear him chatter quietly from the living room.
The cafe, despite only bringing him bitter memories nowadays, continues to serve as a safe space for him. Vernon likes to spend his days off in his corner — their corner, it used to be their corner, can’t forget — with his headphones at full volume and too-strong coffee bitter on his tongue.
Josh: Morning
Josh: Well, evening for you
Josh: I’m sooo jet lagged
me: mornin
Josh: Hey did I leave my hoodie? lol
Josh: After I lost my shit about making sure I brought it
me: yeah
me: should i mail it 2 u
Josh: Nah, it’s ok
Josh: I can just buy a new one
They tried to make it work. At least, Vernon tried to make it work. He’s not entirely sure how much effort Joshua put into their relationship after he moved back to the States, going off of how their texts slowly died out until Vernon was frantically grasping for reasons to text him. Joshua told him multiple times that it was the time zone difference, that he just didn’t have the energy to keep a conversation going from how exhausted he was from college, but Vernon thinks he gave up the moment his plane hit the tarmac in Los Angeles.
me: i found ur cologne
me: it was under some clothes on the dresser
Josh: Ok
It took two days for Joshua to get back to him. When he did, Vernon didn’t get much else of a response other than ok, and ended up dumping the remains of the bottle down the toilet.
me: how’s school?
me: break starts soon yea?
me: i’m going to bed
me: mornin
Joshua stopped responding, and Vernon stopped trying.
It took a week of Vernon not texting him, of Vernon chewing his nails down until they’re red and raw, for Joshua to finally text back.
Josh: Call me.
Their phone call lasted nearly an hour, filled with Joshua’s quiet, exhausted voice telling Vernon he should’ve known from the start that this wouldn’t work and Vernon asking him to keep trying, please.
In the end, Joshua broke off their relationship.
Two years down the drain, and Vernon is tired.
The coffee tastes stale on Vernon’s tongue, and he dumps the cup, mostly full, into the trash can at the front of the cafe. He can feel the baristas glaring daggers at his back, and Vernon walks out with his hands in his coat pockets.
