“You should stop crying,” Seungkwan advises over the phone. “The first step to healing is to not hear your own tears every time you try to have a thought.”
“Does it sound like I’m crying,” Chan hisses, lying flat on his bed. Never mind the fact that he does in fact have a trash can next to him filled with tissues, because Seungkwan cannot see that no matter what he claims. The logic is sort of the same, anyway. Stop crying so you aren’t constantly reminded of your sadness, even though it still exists. Pretend that you aren’t as weak as Seungkwan thinks you are, emotionally at least, and maybe you really will grow up a little.
“Just because you graduated doesn’t mean you won’t see each other again,” he answers, and the whiplash from the sudden change in tone smacks Chan in the face. “You can’t exactly erase years of friendship just like that.”
“But we live on opposite sides of the country,” Chan says. “And it’s hard to say we’re friends.”
“I’ll be back before you know it, and you’ll be complaining because it’s too soon,” Seungkwan snaps. Chan rolls his eyes. Seungkwan is being completely honest, but that wasn’t the right answer and he knows it.
“As if I care at all about you.”
“The nerve of kids these days! I’m trying to be a good hyung and you respond like that, geez.”
“The irony here is that I’d love nothing more than for you to switch places with Hansol-hyung.”
“And the truth comes out,” Seungkwan says.
Chan runs a hand through his hair. Yes, the truth comes out, coaxed with treats and later, pushed out by force. Seungkwan is visiting Hansol in his hometown, the tail leg of a graduation trip that really started the previous year, during his own graduation. Hansol and Chan were the ones left to run their university dance club and although Seungkwan and Chan were childhood friends, and Seungkwan and Hansol had clicked instantly and paradoxically during orientation week, they had never really been close until what Seungkwan would call “an epoch in Chan’s life”. Whatever that means!
“Okay, and what am I supposed to do about it now?”
“I dunno, maybe tell him?”
“You’re so useless,” Chan says, “I oughta—”
“Hey?” Hansol says. “What’s up?”
Chan’s mouth gapes wide open. “What.”
“Mm, what?” Hansol laughs uncertainly. “I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Neither do I,” Chan says, mentally composing an furious text message to Seungkwan.
“How’s it going then? It’s been a while, I’ve missed talking to you.”
“Oh, nothing much, I’ve just been helping teach at Dad’s school, and— what?”
Hansol laughs. “Why are you so surprised all the time?”
“I think Seungkwan messed my head up as a child,” Chan mutters, and Hansol laughs even louder.
“Tell me more,” he says, and beside him Seungkwan is smiling into his hands.
