Round 1: Quotes

About

The world is full of beautiful words. The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. Words start wars and end them, create love and choke it, bring us to laughter and joy and tears. There is no falsehood in words, only in things.

Calling all readers, lovers of poetry and music, screen and stage. If you have a google spreadsheet of Metric/Marina/Mitski/Macklemore lyrics, now's your time to shine. What does Nobel Laureate Louise Glück have in common with the Future of Kpop Lee Chan? I don't know, but we can find out.

Examples

Junhui + The Archer
"Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it's getting so old
Help me hold onto you"
Taylor Swift - The Archer

Verhao; "I loved him from the moment he walked in"
Just thinking about all the verhao soft feelings from the last week of November, especially the killer tweet from @literarykpop with the quote:
"I laughed and said, ‘Life is easy.’ What I meant was, ‘Life is easy with you here, and when you leave, it will be hard again." - Miranda July

95 line - R18
"Houston, we have a problem."

***

Soonyoung moves in and out of the apartment over the course of a year. At what point do you start to call sleeping over a residency vs. visitation? Even if there was a cutoff, neither of them would have been keeping track well enough to know.

He was over for something like a month straight in August, when Soonyoung was on a veggie kick and insisted on using the salad spinner in Jihoon’s kitchen to make lunch every day. Jihoon had gotten it as a gift from his mom and never intended to use it, so logically he could have let Soonyoung take it home.

Instead he stopped eating rice three meals a day, and the strangest part was that he didn’t notice the loss until it was over. And then he went right back to reliably loading up four stainless steel bowls of it, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Jihoon is making sunny-side up eggs for breakfast when Kwon Soonyoung barges in the doorway like he owns the place. Jihoon never changes the code, which is probably a security risk. Soonyoung hasn’t been over for two weeks.

“Can I have some?” Soonyoung asks in lieu of a greeting, a great big smile on his face. “I’m starving.”

“The sesame seeds are on the counter,” Jihoon replies, flipping one of the eggs over because in truth, he doesn’t like his yolks raw.

“Work has been so busy lately,” Soonyoung says, perhaps to justify his long absence, “I run into so many people,” and Jihoon hums. He’s a physical trainer, and his classes are always full to the brim after New Year’s, for obvious reasons. But Jihoon suspects there are other things at play, like his active social schedule, the old “I haven’t seen you since last year!” joke that Soonyoung actually takes seriously and tries to amend as soon as possible. Except for when it comes to Jihoon, maybe.

“Work has been busy here too,” he comments, and Soonyoung socks him lightly in the shoulder. You wouldn’t know it because Jihoon works in a one-man home office and he never speaks unless he’s debugging some kind of error. Rather than consult one of his colleagues over the phone he’d enlist Soonyoung to sit in the chair next to him and listen to the process until the mistake showed itself to him. The funny thing about Kwon Soonyoung is that he often gives you answers without realizing it, oblivious to his own effects. After getting in the habit of doing this Soonyoung showed up in the afternoon one day with a small stuffed tiger, which he set up on the top edge of Jihoon’s main monitor.

“Wonwoo told me it’s usually a rubber duck you’re supposed to talk to, but I wanted you to think of it like me,” he had said conspiratorially. “Since I won’t always be around.”

“You really didn’t have to,” Jihoon said, his face burning a little. The lighting is yellow in the afternoon of a sunny day, Soonyoung wouldn’t notice.

“Wonwoo says I should get rid of some of them anyway,” Soonyoung answered, grinning, “my stuffies, I mean. My tiger stuffies. But I couldn’t bear to throw them away.”

At the age of twenty someone Jihoon no longer remembers asked him if he’d want to marry and he answered that he’d rather die. The thought of always sleeping in the same bed as someone else, waking up and brushing their teeth together, and kissing them goodbye at the rack where they kept their respective car keys made him shiver. Having to rely on someone else and worse, learn to love them, was off the table completely. Jihoon hates people who are too enthusiastic, too affectionate, constantly expecting too much from him.

Maybe that’s why they are what they are and Soonyoung leaves every time they get too close.

“I really love you,” Soonyoung says quietly after spending the day with Minghao, the evening at the bar where Joshua works, face drawn close enough to feel Soonyoung's breath on the back of his neck. Soonyoung is like this to everyone.

Jihoon keeps his eyes shut tight, blanket up to his shoulders, facing the wall in the darkness. And as always, he pretends to sleep.

oh i love what you did with it!!Jihoon's canonical recalcitrance with Soonyoung, or what he chooses to show of it anyway is such a great thing to tap into but with the knowledge that he's an unreliable narrator here, every re-read reveals new ways of looking at them.
I love your Soonyoung! The bits of his character you have built through the details and backstory and through Jihoon, of course, are so so good. Like this: The funny thing about Kwon Soonyoung is that he often gives you answers without realizing it, oblivious to his own effects.

The lines are from Liu's Forty-Percent Chance of Rain! And the title is Anti-Love Poem by Mone Zote! Both lovely pieces!

thank you i'm really happy that you enjoyed it!! i'm really glad that the unreliable narrator tag was helpful too! i hadn't thought of it initially but after rereading the final section i felt it was really necessary to clarify that ljh has no idea whats going on in ksy's brain haha...

i tried to look up the timothy liu lines when i was writing this but i couldn't figure out which poem it was, thank you for sharing!! i will look into reading those... i don't read a lot of poetry so i would love to start here :]

ohhh i think this is my favorite snhn dynamic... the ljh unreliable narrator + fear of vulnerability/expectation is so spectacular and i love how we get to see ksy thru his eyes!! the bit where ksy gives ljh the stuffed tiger to talk to made me scream a little, thank u for writing <3

I love these characterizations + their ambiguous relationship sooo much, the contrast between Soonyoung as flighty and childish but earnest and loving vs Jihoon as mature and stable but closed-off and avoidant... ahh that’s a great interpretation of their dynamic! The image of a stuffed tiger on Jihoon’s monitor (!!!) feels really intimate. the ending Hurt in a Really Good Way T.T thank you for writing!!

thank you for describing them that way, i keep thinking about it! what a contrast in personalities, and the direct tie to how stable where they sleep each night is... i'm glad that you enjoyed it, thank you for the thoughtful comment!!

this was so sweet, i loved it! and the ending was perfect. the dynamic between jihoon and soonyoung is so interesting. i appreciate that you included "unreliable narrator as a tag" because it is really interesting to wonder how soonyoung sees all of this! thank you for writing!

thank you so much!! as time goes by i've only been more and more fascinated by soonhoon's relationship because they are total opposites but they also have so much drive in common... but yeah especially their ways of expressing affection, and even how that's affected by who the other person in the r/s is. so i'm really glad i got the opportunity to explore their dynamic and that it was fun to read!!
