Round 1: Quotes

About

The world is full of beautiful words. The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. Words start wars and end them, create love and choke it, bring us to laughter and joy and tears. There is no falsehood in words, only in things.

Calling all readers, lovers of poetry and music, screen and stage. If you have a google spreadsheet of Metric/Marina/Mitski/Macklemore lyrics, now's your time to shine. What does Nobel Laureate Louise Glück have in common with the Future of Kpop Lee Chan? I don't know, but we can find out.

Examples

Junhui + The Archer
"Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it's getting so old
Help me hold onto you"
Taylor Swift - The Archer

Verhao; "I loved him from the moment he walked in"
Just thinking about all the verhao soft feelings from the last week of November, especially the killer tweet from @literarykpop with the quote:
"I laughed and said, ‘Life is easy.’ What I meant was, ‘Life is easy with you here, and when you leave, it will be hard again." - Miranda July

95 line - R18
"Houston, we have a problem."

When I was a child, running in the night
Afraid of what might be
Hiding in the dark, hiding in the street
And of what was following me
Now hounds of love are hunting
I've always been a coward

***

There's hardly anyone else in the building this late at night, when the door to his office swings open. Wonwoo tries not to be caught by surprise, jerking in the direction of the disturbance and sending a stack of paper crashing off his desk. Subtlety has never been his strong suit anyways. Laughter rings out and Wonwoo tries to hide the burn on the back of his neck as he picks up the papers from the floor.

What he wouldn't give anyways, to hear that laughter.

His most recent clients are stubborn assholes who want another presentation and strategy meeting before they sign on, and the deadline is approaching faster than he'd like to admit — but that's neither here nor there. Not when Soonyoung is in his office, in his space, holding out a cup of coffee (Americano, completely black, triple-shot, the way he knows Wonwoo likes it). (It's the small things. It always has been.)

"Hey." He folds his arms across the desk after accepting the coffee, a small smile on his face. It's a poor imitation of the person he is during the day: the senior partner responsible for an entire department and then some. "What are you still doing here?"

Soonyoung scoffs, halfway through the threshold and holding the glass door open with his shoulder. Like this, with his back to the warm office light and face illuminated by the city at night, a gold halo forms around his figure. Wonwoo tries not to trace the lines that curl around him, tapers down on the urge to pull him in the rest of the way. "Haven't you heard? It's against company rules to go home before your boss."

Guilt blooms immediately in his chest. It must show on his face, because Soonyoung is laughing again. "I'm kidding! I'm working on re-organizing our client files ahead of the new year audit."

Wonwoo frowns, tries not to think too deeply about the tiny ways Soonyoung amazes him everyday and how he reacts like he's in high school all over again instead of pushing thirty. "You could do that tomorrow. It's past hours already."

Soonyoung chirps. "And so could you. Is that the amended proposal for the BTS Group?" and then he's closing the distance, letting the door fall shut behind him as he steps in and lets the curiosity overtake him. Wonwoo immediately leans back and makes space for Soonyoung to hover right on top of him. Normally, it irks him off when people do this. But this is Soonyoung, who smells exclusively like lilac and baby powder and never makes any sudden moves in his space.

This is Soonyoung — his secretary for the past five years, whom Wonwoo trusts more than the other senior partners, more than anyone else in this company.

Unsurprisingly, it only takes five minutes of reading through before he spots the first mistake in the contract Wonwoo wrote while sleep-deprived. Soonyoung explains it back to him, asking if there's anyway the language could be exploited, and Wonwoo finds himself making an urgent note to revise it because he's right. Not for the first time, he thinks about how smart Soonyoung is. How lucky he is to have him in his life.

Soonyoung laughs. "You must be really sleep deprived, huh?" and there's mirth in his gaze, looking down at Wonwoo, the curves of his mouth turned upwards.

"What did I just say?" He stares blankly.

A hand reaches up to ruffle his hair, and Wonwoo closes his eyes for the briefest second instinctively. Lets himself enjoy the feeling of Soonyoung's palm, warm and comforting. There's a teasing lilt to his voice when Soonyoung speaks, smiling. "For the record, I know I'm smarter than you. But I think I'm just as lucky to have you in my life." and before Wonwoo can fully process his words, the hand drops in between them.

"Get some sleep, Wonu-yah." He says fondly, knocking Wonwoo's head to the side, and then he's out of Wonwoo's space and out of his office, like a fever dream. The way it's always been.

For the record, Jeon Wonwoo is a coward. There's nothing new here. Off the record, he's also in love with Kwon Soonyoung. That's not new either, but the name for it is.

It starts with being the only boy in the entirety of Changwon to not jump into the Junru Reservoir the day before high school graduation and ends with whatever it is that he holds for Soonyoung. A torch, a candle, a flamethrower. Something warm that splits open in his chest every time he looks at him, blood spilling over on the sides and onto his desk.

He's careful to not let it show, but that was easier when he first met Soonyoung and couldn't name what it was in his chest. He's older now, not necessarily wiser but resigned enough to label it for what it is. And it's fine, really. He doesn't have to do anything about it. There's ethical red tape and legal red tape as Soonyoung's direct superior and at the heart of it, he thinks he already knows what Soonyoung's answer is. Will be.

Wonwoo's never pretended to be brave anyways.

note: i wasn't planning on filling but this gave me such a severe case of brain rot i immediately 1) wrote this in a trance while listening to the what's wrong with secretary kim ost 2) disregarded my work schedule. speed = not my finest writing, but when i get the time i hope to revise this significantly <3

oh gosh the entire of this fic is captured in that one moment where soonyoung enters wonwoo sees him with a halo around his head. your content to repress his feelings coward wonwoo voice is so good and really the visual of him glowing up into a mingyu-sized flamethrower every time he's around soonyoung will keep me going for a while. thank you for sharing this!
