Round 1: Quotes

About

The world is full of beautiful words. The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. Words start wars and end them, create love and choke it, bring us to laughter and joy and tears. There is no falsehood in words, only in things.

Calling all readers, lovers of poetry and music, screen and stage. If you have a google spreadsheet of Metric/Marina/Mitski/Macklemore lyrics, now's your time to shine. What does Nobel Laureate Louise Glück have in common with the Future of Kpop Lee Chan? I don't know, but we can find out.

Examples

Junhui + The Archer
"Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it's getting so old
Help me hold onto you"
Taylor Swift - The Archer

Verhao; "I loved him from the moment he walked in"
Just thinking about all the verhao soft feelings from the last week of November, especially the killer tweet from @literarykpop with the quote:
"I laughed and said, ‘Life is easy.’ What I meant was, ‘Life is easy with you here, and when you leave, it will be hard again." - Miranda July

95 line - R18
"Houston, we have a problem."

You laughed when I marked cookbooks with the same care as notes in the lab but for me it was the same: the same details of love – dissolving, filtering, collecting until truth is so small it fits on the tongue.

Seokmin’s hands were steady as he wrote across the top of his lined sheet of paper. Chocolate Chip Cookies, in his best brush lettering, the way he used to do it on his college history notes. He’d gotten more compliments on his artful notes than he did on the actual classwork. He supposed he should have more attention to the events than making sure he’d written The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in pretty letters. He did think it was pretty funny that he’d written them in a fancy orange and yellow gradient, though.

He sighed and slid the paper aside, unsatisfied with his first attempt. It could be neater. And maybe, instead of just writing it in black, he could use a tan marker and dot it with brown chips. That would be nice to look at. He set his black pen aside and started searching through his box for the right color.

“Oooh, are you gonna make this recipe?” Soonyoung asked, appearing over his boyfriend’s shoulder. He wrapped his arms around Seokmin’s neck, making him jolt and smear a streak of marker across the top of the page. “Oops. My bad. I like the way you wrote it on the other paper though!”

“I want it to be cool, though,” Seokmin stressed, sliding the messed paper away. “And no, I’m not making the cookies now. You ate the last of my chocolate chips.”

“Oops,” Soonyoung said again, perching himself on top of the counter rather than sitting in one of the available chairs. “I needed them. For energy. After my dance class last week.”

“Chocolate is a bad energy source and you know it,” Seokmin scolded, carefully writing out his title again.

“You weren’t home to cook for me,” Soonyoung said dramatically. “There was nothing I could do.”

Seokmin finished the word Chocolate and paused, inspecting his work. “Wait, should I write ‘chocolate chip’ in brown, and then make just the word ‘cookie’ look like… a cookie?”

Soonyoung hopped off the counter and squinted down at the letters. “It looks fine like this though? Why does it need to be so cool, anyways? Or handwritten, for that matter? You can just keep the recipe on your phone.”

“I know that,” Seokmin replied, re-capping the marker. “It’s just… I don’t know. It feels more special this way, I guess. It’s not even my own recipe or anything, just my favorite one. And writing it down like this means I can save it for the future. For like. Our kids, or something. I don’t know. It’s stupid.” He slumped down on the table with a sigh.

“Nooooo,” Soonyoung crowed, draping himself on top of the other man. “It’s not stupid when you put it like that! I just didn’t understand. I’m sorry. It’s cute that you want to save it for the future. Like, you saying that made my heart beat ten times faster. I love you~~~”

“I love you too,” Seokmin said softly. “Can you let me up now?”

“Yes. As long as we can go buy more chocolate chips and make these later. And also if you show me how to do the fancy letters. I wanna make cool sign-up posters for my dance classes.”

a/n: aghh sorry to double fill but there is not a day that goes by in this new year that i do not think of doughkyeom dk pizza vlive on xmas eve. nor cooking food as an act of devotion, a love language in its own right. nor seokgyu relations - they’re either straight up married or embroiled in intense rivalry. there is no in between. this is what you get when you mix all three. i am simply obsessed.

this was meant to be more tender(also not that much cooking here) but we started w/with some good seokgyu intentions at least

“You’re hovering,” Mingyu complains, waving his chopsticks to disperse the steam wafting from the dish. “How am I supposed to eat with you staring at me like that?”

“Sorry, sorry,” Seokmin giggles a little nervously, hands coming around to twist themselves in the canvas of his apron as he leans against the counter across from Mingyu. “I just want to make sure it’s good!”

“Then,” Mingyu pauses right before Seokmin's japchae reaches his mouth, pink lips open to make a soft ‘o’, his tiny canines peeking out. For dramatic effect, Seokmin supposes. Occupational hazard of being friends with an award-winning actor. “This is terrible and you’ve poisoned me. I’m dying.”

A terrible urge to thwack Mingyu on the shoulder arises, although all the years that Seokmin’s known Mingyu prevents him from reaching out to do so, tempering the feeling into something that resembles reluctant (yet fond) endearment. How embarrassing.

“Fuck off, you haven’t even taken a bite yet,” Seokmin rolls his eyes.

Mingyu copies him in kind, sending a middle finger up in lieu of reply as he finally takes a bite.

“It’s because it’s you that it’s good,” Mingyu says through bulging cheeks, flecks of food flying everywhere at once. “Your food is incredible. Anyone with eyes can see how much love you put into it.”

There must be some lingering doubt in Seokmin’s eyes, because Mingyu says, as politely as he can while still actively chewing, “Seriously, don’t worry, Seokmin-ah. Your restaurant is going to do great.”

“You’re gross,” Seokmin complains, though he’s secretly preening on the inside. “No one’s going to have an appetite anymore after they see your face like that, Mingyu-yah. It’s bad for business.”

“You mean this one?” Mingyu asks obnoxiously, making That Face - the one that has all the noonas going crazy for him, the one that made all the netizens fall in love with him famous when he was acting that one drama, the very same one that keeps these editorial magazines ringing up his phone.

I’m Kim Mingyu, he shouts as he stands up on a chair, don’t you forget it.

Seokmin has no intentions to. But just because he can, and because he’s Seokmin, and this is what they’ve always been to each other, he whips Mingyu with a wet dish towel, screeching in delight when the other boy topples to the floor, upending what’s left of his japchae onto his head.

Click. Seokmin grins, pocketing his phone. He is nothing but an excellent pupil, and he would absolutely disgrace Yoon Jeonghan if he didn’t take advantage of a situation like this. Perfect blackmail material, really, his mind is already racing a mile a minute with hashtags to outfit his upcoming Instagram post - #kimmingyuyouEATfoodnotplaywithit #nomannersmingyu #smh #heathen #yjhareyouproudofme, and of course, Seokmin’s personal favorite: #kmg_more_like_KLUTZ_mg (complete with the appropriate emojis, of course).

“Lee Seokmin, you’re so dead.” Mingyu grabs his drink, which has miraculously avoided all catastrophe, and angles the mouth of the cup threateningly at Seokmin. “This means war.”

Seokmin yelps, but he can’t keep the stupid grid off his face. He might be running for his life, but the way Mingyu is alive with the chase, in motion, a windmill of lanky arms and long legs that refuse to stay still, enraptures him. Mingyu has always been like that, enthralling and wondrous and bright. Seokmin can’t help but move closer to the light, just so that he can bask in the glow.

There are bits of japchae in Mingyu’s hair, loud declarations of love hidden in the minuscule details of its preparation - without carrots, because Mingyu won’t say a word if they’re in there but he really prefers his noodles without them; soy sauce from a specific brand he and Mingyu had picked up once at the convenience on the corner because they were too lazy to make the trek down the block to the supermarket; a little spice but not too much, because Mingyu loves the taste but his spice tolerance isn’t as great as Jun-hyung’s, now, don’t get too carried away.

Seokmin laughs because only he knows. It’s his secret recipe, after all.

HUI UR LITERALLY TOO GOOD TO ME ;_____; rivalry marriage is one of my favorite dynamics (i am a large advocate for making idiot/dumbass the new "honey" for terms of endearment) nd this prompt just screamed seokgyu to meeeee

food /is/ a love lang in its own right (see: asian culture) tbh and i'm so glad i was able to explore it tenderly here i think about dk pizza live way too often and he is so the type to pour everything in his food so ofc i had to...

THIS IS SO PALPABLY SEOKGYU OMG
the reluctance fondness, the annoyed tenderness, the FOOD!!!, the use of acquired jeonghanisms as weaponry and!! using 'bask in the glow' metaphors in a seokmin fic but when he's using it for someone else!! aaah this was a wonderful read!

AHHH KARINAAAA I CANT BELIEVE YOUVE DONE THIS I THINK I OWE U MY ENTIRE LIFE???

- u know how I feel abt seokgyuism and their ridiculous constant oscillation btwn Utter Fondness and trying to kick each others asses and you did that so perfectly… I am crying at overdramatic kmg and lsm “tempering the feeling into something that resembles reluctant (yet fond) endearment” HHHH EXACTLY!!
- and then kmg is horribly kind and earnest and then he does The Face and then lsm whips him w a dish towel and he ends up w japchae on his head which is also. Yeah. Exactly
- #heathen #yjhareyouproudofme
- “Mingyu has always been like that, enthralling and wondrous and bright. Seokmin can’t help but move closer to the light, just so that he can bask in the glow. There are bits of japchae in Mingyu’s hair, loud declarations of love hidden in the minuscule details of its preparation.” UGH THEM so stupidly endearing and annoyingly tender and their two love languages in this (cooking and Idiocy) are wonderful and so seokgyu I will cry

Thank u SO SO MUCH for this I will never ever stop thinking about it <333

WHEN I SAW THE PROMPT KI I HAD TO.. I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO YOU OWE ME NOTHING!!!! i think the seokgyuisms we discuss always really have me reeling and itching to write them because their dynamic is just so!!!!!! fun and light-hearted vs. the tender love of seokhao . tbh seokgyu r bros who are DUMB and in love!!! cooking n idiots r 2 things that just go insanely well together

The way you opened this by describing seokgyu as "they’re either straight up married or embroiled in intense rivalry" I was already So Invested and this didn't disappoint T.T I love their teasing dialogue and the tone of this, so bright and happy I was smiling the whole time!!
My favorite line is the soy sauce from a specific brand he and Mingyu had picked up once at the convenience on the corner because they were too lazy to make the trek down the block to the supermarket because, subtle intimacies mmm delicious. Also Mingyu has always been like that, enthralling and wondrous and bright. - that one HURTS thank you it's perfect <3

"I'll cook," you say loudly into the silence of the dorm, and your hyungs sigh in relief, some of the tension falling from their shoulders. You said it to be helpful, but more than that, to hide away, to take refuge in the silence of the kitchen, in the one place where you control everything. Everything, from the sharpness of the knives to the temperature of the oven and how quickly things get washed and dried.

Something simple, you think, but with a lot of chopping. You'd sort of like to knead, but it's too late to bake bread and making treats would just be insulting when so many of them are on diets. A stir fry, you think, all the veg in the kitchen, and chicken. Some spices, noodles, maybe some sauces—you'll see how you feel.

You close the kitchen door behind you and pull on an apron, hooking up one of your cooking playlists—heavy beats, club music, something to sink into. After all, cooking is a rhythmic thing. There's a grace in each slice, in each toss, each dice; everything has a time and a moment and a duration. It's like writing a song—Jihoon-hyung probably wouldn't agree, but you'll never tell him.

Getting lost in the motions is so easy that you don't notice someone come in until Chan is stealing a slice of pepper off the chopping board and beaming at you before disappearing with a glass of water. Seungkwan pops in a little later to make sure you're adding turmeric—it's his latest spice obsession and it has to go into every single dish. It makes for some interesting flavours, but you don't mind. All you want them to be is happy.

You'd take healthy too.

But it does not do to dwell on things you can't control. Instead, you turn to the food, turning up the heat under the wok and adding another slashing of soy sauce, giving it all a stir while you're at it. The noodles are coming along nicely—you poke them a bit and then go to get ice for their water bath. Maybe, you think, if the food is utterly perfect, if it is warming and filling and soothing and helpful; maybe they'll know exactly how much you care for them. Maybe by being this for them—you can't convince the managers to do anything or change anything, you can't heal your sick friends, or wave a magic wand to get rid of your hyungs' nightmares, but maybe being able to make food that somehow feels like an extension of yourself, maybe that will help.

"Dinner's ready!!"

this is so nice!! the title is so charming, and the entire piece just resonates with /mingyu/. it's so sensory and vivid, but it also holds a message: "/ You'd take healthy too. / But it does not do to dwell on things you can't control." is really striking - i love the optimism!! thank you for writing!

Ahhh how soft and lovely, I feel warmed by this character study of Mingyu!! Maybe, you think, if the food is utterly perfect, if it is warming and filling and soothing and helpful; maybe they'll know exactly how much you care for them. — this line melted my heart. The 2nd person POV is also done really well and I love how his thoughts are included, thanks for sharing!
