“Well, I want advice,” Mingyu whined. It was two hours to soundcheck sometime in the middle of a tour, which was usually around when Soonyoung started forgetting which city they were in. Better him than the rest of them, really. “Isn’t that what members are for? Listening to me in my time of need?” He collapsed into the waiting room couch.
“They’re for telling you to work harder instead of lying around,” Seungcheol shot back lightly, but he was getting pulled away to have the medical team check on him anyway. Mingyu scowled, before he felt kinda bad about it.
“Anyone else want to tell me what to do about Chaeyeon?”
“It’s pointless to love someone who loves their career more than you,” Jeonghan said, not looking up from his phone. “If you ask me.”
Seungkwan gave Jeonghan a long, knowing look. “I already told you this, Mingyu, but you’re too susceptible to other people’s suggestions. Shouldn’t you do what you want? Do you even like her?”
“It’s complicated,” Mingyu complained. “I’m going to go make ramyun.”
Unlike Mingyu Jeonghan would never solicit public opinion on his relationship issues. In fact Seungkwan was quite literally told “It’s none of your business, but thank you,” in such a faux customer service voice that Jeonghan had to know it would infuriate him.
“Hyung, you don’t want to talk about it at all?” he pressed on the walk to the venue backstage.
“What a ridiculous question,” Jeonghan said.
Seungkwan huffed beside him, ignoring the confused look Chan was giving them. He wouldn’t ask about it later anyway. “I know you aren’t gonna bring it up first.”
“That’s because I don’t think you can help me,” Jeonghan returned.
“You look sad,” Seungkwan said.
Jeonghan stopped in his tracks then, letting the group go ahead as they fell to the back, arms crossed. “Is now really a good time to talk about this?”
“You can’t keep making excuses forever,” Seungkwan said, deliberately walking past him and leaving him alone in the dark.
There was no need to intentionally forget about Nayoung. Jeonghan blinked and five years had passed since the last time he saw her.
She looked up from the pajamas she’d been holding and they fell back into their place on the rack. “It’s you,” she said. Jeonghan had a hat and mask on — so did she — it would be pointless to pretend they didn’t recognize each other anyway.
Something tightened in his chest and he pretended it hadn’t. “What are you doing here?” he asked, quietly. It wasn’t a big shop.
“My friend is having a baby,” Nayoung responded. “I need a gift for the shower.” A moment passed as he barely acknowledged her answer on the surface. “And what about you?”
He had lost as soon as he asked the question. “I wanted to look at baby clothes,” he said.
She gazed at him. “Are you— do you?” She paused. “Just looking?”
“Yeah.” He was on his way to the picture books, next.
“We’re getting quite old,” she murmured. “Hey, since you seem to have a taste for this stuff, do you want to help me pick something out?”
“I wouldn’t give myself that much credit,” Jeonghan said. What he really wanted to say was—
Nayoung adjusted her shoulder bag. “I hate shopping, you know that. So it would help.”
“A diaper bag would be practical,” Jeonghan said. “If you’re putting yourself in your friend’s shoes.”
Nayoung walked out with 80,000 won in merchandise. Jeonghan was empty-handed.
“This is for you actually,” she said after they’d exited onto the street through the front door. She handed him the wooden dinosaur figure he’d been eyeing from the start. “You were always so obvious,” she added, despite herself.
He looked down at it. “Now I owe you,” he said.
Nayoung turned towards him. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I hadn’t thought about you in a while,” Jeonghan said. It was so outwardly cruel that Nayoung would have known it was only intended to look callous, because Jeonghan couldn’t strip his feelings out of his voice no matter how hard he tried.
A black car pulled up to the curb and Nayoung opened the passenger door for herself, as he stood there watching. “I wish I could say the same,” Nayoung said. “I hope you’re well.”
A/N: omg I started listening to all because of the prompt and it's such a nice song T_T♥
Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
(Also, I definitely recommend the whole Snow Patrol album that song is on!)
Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
oof... the mortifying ordeal of being completely and utterly seen through by your ex.
you packed so much into this, i'm so intrigued by all the hints of backstory and other background relationships! in mingyu's words "it's complicated", and you captured that vibe so perfectly. thanks so much for writing and sharing!
Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
that ending was such a gut punch even though I knew going on what this was going to be like because of the prompt+your writing
Re: [FILL] this is not a love song

Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
first of all, canon compliant exes inyyjh is so delicious... <3 yjh refusing to speak on it: In fact Seungkwan was quite literally told “It’s none of your business, but thank you,” in such a faux customer service voice that Jeonghan had to know it would infuriate him. fighting tooth and nail to keep it to himself and the quiet implication that he's kept it private because it means/meant too much... also “That’s because I don’t think you can help me,” all the logical excuses to not speak on it when it's obviously a pain point juxtaposed with iny's unaffected attitude in the later scenes... the idea that yjh is the only one holding on because he has in fact Not talked about it...
i love how aloof nayoung comes off in their interactions and all the language that jeonghan is trying to mirror the same facade, but cracks at the last moment!! “I hadn’t thought about you in a while,” Jeonghan said. It was so outwardly cruel that Nayoung would have known it was only intended to look callous, because Jeonghan couldn’t strip his feelings out of his voice no matter how hard he tried. risa i'm on the ground... how could you do this to me. INY'S FINAL LINES... truly a woman who has reconciled whatever their past was and is over him. i love the part about the dinosaur also, how well she still knows him and how casually she imparts this knowledge is Absolutely Devastating. this is karmic retribution for all the feelings yjh has played with in his career...
risa i'm just so not normal about this TT___TT such a treat to read inyyjh written by you, always!! ♡
Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
i think my intent with nayoung didn't come across to the readers though, because of the yjh pov. i tried to write her as honest the entire time, including that she had, regrettably, thought about yjh recently because she wasn't fully over it either. but the yjh pov masks the risa-typical iny sentiment, and embarrassment about the sentiment. still i wanted jeonghan to come out of it feeling like the bigger loser, because i don't do enough of it!
i updated my running list of inyyjh fic and it amazes me how long we've been doing this... ♡♡ thank you for always indulging me and making me crazy!!

When Joshua checks the intercom and sees who’s waiting outside his apartment, he almost doesn’t let them in. If Yoon Jeonghan can afford a flight to LA, and a rideshare out to Joshua’s home, then he can certainly afford a hotel. Joshua allows himself almost a full minute of the fantasy of turning Jeonghan away before he buzzes him into the building and goes to open his door.
“Why are you here?” is the first thing Joshua says to Jeonghan in nearly two years— in person, at least. They do talk over KKT occasionally, when either of them can be bothered to check their messages. But this is the first time Joshua has seen Jeonghan’s face since the day he left Korea, and he’s not entirely sure it’s a welcome sight.
“Wah, Joshuji!” Jeonghan exclaims in that cutesy voice that always made Joshua want to punch him. “Aren’t you happy to see me?”
Joshua crosses his arms and holds his ground. He’s blocking the door, keeping Jeonghan and his carry-on bag out in the hallway. If it was any of the others on his doorstep—any of the kids—he probably wouldn’t be acting this way. But it isn’t one of the kids, it’s Yoon Jeonghan, and Joshua isn’t going to surrender an inch until he’s sure Jeonghan won’t take an entire mile.
Besides, Jeonghan’s already seen all of Joshua’s worst sides. He spent years mercilessly digging them straight from Joshua’s chest. Even now, there are still flakes of rusted blood beneath his blunt fingernails. Joshua doesn’t have to pretend in front of him, doesn’t have to put on his responsible and reliable hyung mask. Jeonghan already knows that Joshua is a fucking mess— an understanding that Joshua both resents and craves.
“Why are you here?” Joshua repeats.
He can see Jeonghan recalibrating his approach. The others like to complain that Jeonghan is hard to read, but to Joshua he’s always been pretty transparent. Probably because the entire time that Jeonghan was sinking his claws into Joshua and prying him apart, Joshua was doing the same right back.
“I need somewhere to stay,” Jeonghan eventually says. He’s opting for honesty, which is a surprising choice for him, but admittedly probably the right one in this situation. Joshua kind of resents how well Jeonghan still knows him. “Just for a while. And besides, someone had to come see how you’re doing, since you never reply in the group chat.”
Joshua pointedly ignores the implication that he needed a wellness check from across the Pacific Ocean—he’s doing just fine, thanks—and hones in on the rest of Jeonghan’s confession. He almost asks why Jeonghan didn’t run to Seungcheol, like he always used to, but while he may be petty he’s not quite that cruel. Seungcheol doesn’t have space for Jeonghan anymore; it’s a lot harder to host your ex-bandmate when you have a wife and a kid. Especially when your wife has no idea that said bandmate was your last relationship before her, a fling that stretched on for nearly a decade.
Not that that’s any of Joshua’s business. Not anymore, at least. A lot of secrets were buried along with the name Seventeen, including many of Joshua’s own that he would prefer to keep safely locked in a coffin six feet under.
Maybe it had been foolish to think that coming back to LA would allow him to escape all of his ghosts. He should have known better to think that he could ever truly escape Yoon Jeonghan. He should have known better to think that he actually wanted to escape Yoon Jeonghan.
Joshua nudges the door open wider and reaches for Jeonghan’s bag. “Come in, then,” he says. “I was just about to make dinner. Is pasta okay?”
Relief spills across Jeonghan’s face like oil on water. “Yeah,” he says, his voice creaky and painfully familiar. A haunted house that, despite everything, still feels like home. “Pasta is great.”

Re: [FILL] this is not a love song
But it isn’t one of the kids, it’s Yoon Jeonghan, and Joshua isn’t going to surrender an inch until he’s sure Jeonghan won’t take an entire mile. i love this description!! the way they both act different to different people is why i love the dynamic of these two so much. josh knows him so well... and that goes into my second favorite quote:
The others like to complain that Jeonghan is hard to read, but to Joshua he’s always been pretty transparent. Probably because the entire time that Jeonghan was sinking his claws into Joshua and prying him apart, Joshua was doing the same right back. the mirror image is so delicious!! so many conclusions we could draw about what respective secrets they had too... i enjoyed it, thank you for writing!
