WHEN MINGYU WAS SIXTEEN AND BEGAN HIS CAREER IN FORMULA THREE, someone told him that he needed to understand that he could possibly be his own downfall if he lets the whole thing get into his head too much. He doesn’t remember now if it was his former race engineer or if it was his performance trainer who told him that, but oddly enough, he only remembers it now that he’s fighting for his spot in Formula One.

He’s twenty-seven now and still without a world title after a total of forty one podiums, twenty fastest laps, and twelve race wins despite being eight years in his F1 career. He remembers stepping into a Mercedes once, his race engineer telling him that it would finally be his year. That was three years ago.

For some reason, despite his record-breaking career debut (two wins and three podiums), and a stellar amount of points gathered for all of his teams, he seems to be unable to land a single world driver’s championship trophy.

He leaves the simulation room thinking about the recent numbers in his races. Wonwoo, his race engineer, told him that he should let the engineering team worry about the numbers, that he should just continue driving and tell them if the car feels good.

“You should stick to getting a feel for the car instead of stressing about the numbers. That’s our job, Kim.” Wonwoo gives him a pat on the back, but Mingyu’s stomach is still unravelling, like there are unruly moths inside of it rather than butterflies.

“I hope that’s not a dig at my intellect.” Mingyu knows it isn’t, but he also hates being told to not worry about the numbers. He’s a driver, for god’s sake, he’s supposed to deliver good results, and good results mean good statistics, which means he should absolutely worry about the numbers.

“You should have become an engineer with how obsessed you are with your race statistics.” Wonwoo laughs, but Mingyu only keeps a straight face.

“Oh… I didn’t mean to…” Wonwoo trails off and proceeds to excuse himself, pretending to be busy with the simulator, checking the recent fastest lap time, checking the tyres, checking everything including the goddamn wires.

Mingyu just stands there thinking about how much he wants to throw up, but can’t.

THE PRE-RACE BRIEFING IS ALWAYS THE WORST. Mingyu hates being told what to do. Hates that he would ultimately have to follow whatever strategy the team comes up with, and hates that he must acknowledge the possibility of relinquishing a good spot to his teammate if it comes down to it.

His teammate is a kid, fairly new, fairly decent. The kid didn’t have a breath taking debut the way Mingyu did, but the kid also debuted on a midfield team and not in a powerhouse team like Mingyu did.

(He doesn’t know which one is more embarrassing, the fact that the kid debuted in a midfield team but earned more points than he did during the last race, or the fact that he’s salty about that despite knowing full well that the car he’s driving now is not a Mercedes… a car he isn’t used to.)

(Secret third thing to be embarrassed about: He knows it’s not the car’s fault, or the kid’s. He just can’t seem to drive the way he used to.)

Mingyu’s head floats for the majority of the pre-race briefing. He knows the script all too well, get the points, try to get a podium or a win — if you can, but just ultimately… get the points. They’re eighth in the constructors, though, and it would probably take a miracle before they could even lay their hands on the constructors’ trophy, but Mingyu lets his team principal dream.

Before he leaves, his team principal places his hand on Mingyu’s shoulder.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Kim. Your overthinking makes your driving inconsistent and volatile.”

Mingyu knows that, of course he does, but the thing with overthinking is you just don’t know when or how to stop. It’s even harder when you’re driving at a speed of 300 kilometres per hour.

Still, Mingyu pretends that he’s going to try, and leaves the briefing room with a smile on his face that never really reaches his eyes.

“Goodluck out there,” The kid, Lee Heeseung, gives him an encouraging smile.

It works the opposite of how the kid intended for it, though. Instead of being encouraged, or even somewhat un-burdened, Mingyu only feels annoyed.

IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT MINGYU LOSES. AGAIN. He sits in ninth place, four places above the kid. He takes his small victory (beating the kid), but still mourns over his loss (not winning). It has been two years since he moved from Mercedes to Alpine, but he still couldn’t get used to losing.

He should have seen it coming, really. Alpine never really made it on podiums these days. The cars have been getting more and more difficult to drive, and it’s getting harder to adjust especially when you come from driving an even better car.

“There’s a lot of understeer on my car, and while the super softs had enough grip, the car just… wouldn’t cooperate with me.” Heeseung looks like he’s about to cry. Mingyu would have made fun of Heeseung in his head if the same thing didn’t happen to him.

“I had a lot of understeer with mine, too. I think it could be the suspension? Perhaps you guys could look into it for us?” Mingyu looks over at Wonwoo who nods upon silent acknowledgement.

They still haven’t had a friendly conversation after Wonwoo’s joking comment about Mingyu’s career choices. Mingyu doesn’t usually hold grudges, but Wonwoo’s words have been repeating themselves in Mingyu’s head over and over again that he’s starting to believe Wonwoo might be completely right.

Still, he’s not giving this up. He’s already had a taste of what it’s like to win. He doesn’t know if he could stop chasing after that high.

HE LOSES IN MONZA, SPA, THEN SINGAPORE. There’s only one race left and Mingyu knows that even if he wins that race, he’s never going to get his team a Driver Championship trophy, or a Constructor’s trophy. The most he could give them is a promising finish with all of the points that he could muster.

Or, if he’s delusional enough, maybe he could deliver a good performance and win the race, giving his team a bump up the Constructor’s rankings despite the lack of a foreseeable win.

Mingyu knows that the team isn’t expecting much, not when they’re still in the middle of their multiple-year plan to get Alpine on top of the grid. They just want him to try his best and hopefully good results come out of it, that’s really all they’re expecting.

However, it still feels absolutely shitty that despite all of Mingyu’s efforts to be the iconic rookie everyone used to adore, he’s just another driver in the midfield, unable to do anything but lose out to younger, much faster drivers.

He looks at the numbers on the screen and tries to make sense of it before eventually giving up. He sees Wonwoo observing him from the entryway and Mingyu pretends to yawn just to mask his eyes glistening with tears that are about to fall.

“Go get some sleep. I’ll deal with the numbers for you.” Wonwoo gently pats him on the shoulder, “Your time will come soon. Don’t worry about it.”

Mingyu only looks at Wonwoo and gives him a halfhearted smile before walking out of the HQ with shaking palms hidden in his coat pockets.

wow :( mingyu was a great choice for this storyline; i think he really embodies the right combination of confidence and self-doubt that allows him to keep going despite the results trending in the wrong direction. "Your overthinking makes your driving inconsistent and volatile" is so easy to imagine as a physical representation of those emotions. i thought it was really cute also that heeseung has the reactions that betray his youth ("Heeseung looks like he’s about to cry. Mingyu would have made fun of Heeseung in his head if the same thing didn’t happen to him.") cause of how that feeds into mingyu's frustrations even more. i think the age-old story of being worse at what you do than the people younger than you is so good and resonates even more as i get older haha. and wonwoo being there through it all, somewhat awkwardly but fulfilling his role without really being able to help mingyu get over it all is so real. thank you for filling my prompt! :D

“You must be excited,” Huihyeon brought up in the bathroom while Nayoung was touching up her lipstick. “I heard Jeonghan podiumed this weekend. Congratulations.”

Nayoung tried to hide her grimace by wiping at her cupid’s bow. “Oh, that.” She ended up smudging her reapplication instead and cursed. Huihyeon laughed and dug out a makeup wipe from her handbag. “Thank you.”

“You don’t sound happy about it at all,” Huihyeon discerned from where she was leaning against the vanity countertop.

“I am,” lied Nayoung. She’d woken up to a drunk voicemail from Jeonghan, no doubt out all night celebrating with the team. I wish you were here with me, he’d said. Hey, about what we talked about last time, I’ve been thinking – “It’s just been a long time,” she reassured, going in with her lip liner again.

***

Jeonghan formally asked her out ten years ago during his debut full season, after he’d scored his first points in P6. She’d been in the paddock shadowing her dad, who’d sponsored Jeonghan’s motorsport career since his early single-seater days. In between Nayoung discussing his tire deg, Jeonghan had nodded and said as casually as bringing up track conditions, Yeah, I worked the tires a little too hard in the first half of the race. What do you think about having dinner with me?

“It was so sudden,” Nayoung cited later over wine when Jeonghan asked her why she’d accepted his invitation. “Before I knew it, I was saying yes.”

Jeonghan beamed at her, apples of his cheeks flushed from the alcohol. “I’ve wanted to ask you on a date for a long time,” he divulged, putting down his own glass. They were sitting on his hotel room couch and their knees had been touching for a while now, “but I couldn’t bear to do it without a single point to my name.”

Nayoung’s breath hitched when he drew himself close enough that their lips were almost touching. “Sounds like an excuse,” she whispered as he gently took the stem of her glass and placed it on the table beside them. He’d had nothing short of years to express his romantic interest – they’d been sent to the same overseas boarding schools and Nayoung had followed her dad to the race track since she was old enough to remember – but of course he’d create some silly benchmark before allowing himself to make any sort of move.

“We still ended up here, didn’t we?” Jeonghan grinned against her mouth. The lighting was dim and the forgotten movie they’d put on after dinner played on a low volume in the background. Nayoung really should’ve recognized it for the set up it was. But before he could beat her to the punch once more, she shut him up by kissing him.

***

“I’m home,” Jeonghan announced while lugging his suitcase through the entryway and dislodging her shoe rack from its place against the wall in the process.

Nayoung looked up from where she’d been stirring her mom’s doenjang jjigae, considering the entire myriad of reasons she could break up with him. The constant travel, one of them. But Jeonghan could just as easily refute that she needed the space, and he wouldn’t be exactly wrong. “You’re back,” she echoed, turning off the burner.

“I didn’t miss the heat here,” Jeonghan continued. He was bent over, pushing the shoe rack back in order. He’d been stuck in Seoul the entire summer last year after breaking his left arm, but that hadn’t stopped him from texting her every time she was away on business. “Much nicer in Spa. I brought back chocolate, I hope it didn’t melt along the way.”

“Thank you,” Nayoung replied as if she were going through a series of preset cues. Even before the injury, Jeonghan had spent the previous two years scrapping for points and fighting against a series of mechanical DNFs. It was a far cry from when he’d finished third in the Drivers’ Championship back in 2019. “Did you eat on the plane?”

That was another reason. Just as Jeonghan’s career would inevitably wind down, Nayoung was poised to take her dad’s place as CEO on the team. He rounded the kitchen island and pressed a light kiss to her temple. “I was saving my appetite for a homemade meal,” he answered, reaching for two bowls from the cupboard.

She’d asked him over the winter break, could you see yourself still in the paddock, even if you aren’t the one driving the car? And Jeonghan had countered with a laugh that sounded more akin to a sob, but what else would I do with myself?, his back turned to her on the sim.

Nayoung opened the rice cooker for him. She was initially grateful when Jeonghan had stripped off the shiny veneer of his motorsport celebrity with her. It felt like a privilege to see someone so raw and up-close, the amount of trust it took to expose the soft underbelly of yourself without the guarantee of receiving kindness in return.

But later Nayoung understood why people always ended love stories after the confession. The pot inside was empty. “I forgot to cook the rice,” she said plainly at her own fault. Jeonghan could only laugh.

***

Nayoung watched Jeonghan’s GQ Korea video in bed on her iPad when he was away earlier that year. “Thank you for looking at me with so much love throughout my career,” he told the camera after going through his supposed travel essentials that Nayoung knew he actually didn’t carry around. It wasn’t that she particularly found herself missing him, it was that – “I’ll make sure to continue working hard to repay all your support. This has been Formula One driver Yoon Jeonghan.”

After scrolling through the fifth comment in a row declaring an undying love for Jeonghan, Nayoung texted Huihyeon, how do you know when it’s time to break up with someone.

shit, im nayoung r u rlly thinking of ending it??? Huihyeon sent back almost immediately. Nayoung didn’t quite know how to respond to that. She put her phone on Do Not Disturb and played the video back.

The first month after he broke his arm, Nayoung found Jeonghan awake at four in the morning, watching an old race of his in the living room. The sofa dipped when she curled up on the other side of it, but Jeonghan didn’t outwardly acknowledge her presence. He’d rewind and watch back any great overtaking maneuvers he made, over and over again.

After an hour of this, she couldn’t hold it in anymore. “You don’t have a healthy relationship with anything,” Nayoung stated as they both absently stared at the TV screen. She remembered this race, Shanghai 2019. He’d kissed her square on the mouth after the podium ceremony in the paddock, careful media training be damned, and she’d laughed against his cheek and told him he tasted entirely of champagne.

The sun was beginning to rise outside, casting a light blue glare across that same cheek. Jeonghan turned to look at her from where his head was laying on the couch headrest. "I have a healthy relationship with you."

In the ensuing silence, Nayoung knew they both internally debated the merits of that claim.

This is impeccably plotted… I’m always so impressed with how you can tell a whole story in such a short space, with such a satisfying ending line. I love how this ship feels so fleshed out just because of how you all write it and this fic is such a great example of that too, the small character beats that are so evocative and specific to this relationship. Absolutely love it!

sorry in advance for the length of this comment.

- Jeonghan formally asked her out ten years ago THEY'VE BEEN AT IT FOR TEN YEARS plus more of just knowing each other... it really makes a lot of sense though. yjh debuted in seventeen at the perfect age for f1 too... and inyyjh is, in essentially all of our canon, a narrative that stretches over years LOL
- She’d been in the paddock shadowing her dad, who’d sponsored Jeonghan’s motorsport career since his early single-seater days i love this setup for them so much, along with going to the same boarding schools because just like that you can imagine all the interactions they had growing up. i like how they have a financial link but there's no indication that the financial link is what caused them to date. and, i also love how nayoung's decision to break up with him coincides with her upward trend in power and his downward trend in results.
- “I’m home,” Jeonghan announced while lugging his suitcase through the entryway and dislodging her shoe rack from its place against the wall in the process. i love this scene... is it really his home?? i love the symbolism of him messing up the rack too
- The constant travel, one of them. But Jeonghan could just as easily refute that she needed the space, and he wouldn’t be exactly wrong. and this too T___T it really is like... i see iny as someone who values her independence a lot and her personal space. the little details you put in like this just make her back-and-forth about if she should break up with him seem so logical and realistic
- She’d asked him over the winter break, could you see yourself still in the paddock, even if you aren’t the one driving the car? And Jeonghan had countered with a laugh that sounded more akin to a sob, but what else would I do with myself?, his back turned to her on the sim. amazing lines... so emblematic of how much f1 drivers go absolutely all in on racing T___T
- She was initially grateful when Jeonghan had stripped off the shiny veneer of his motorsport celebrity with her. [...] But later Nayoung understood why people always ended love stories after the confession. this line is my absolute favorite it is so (x100) good!! (teary face emoji)
- the whole shanghai rewatch scene is insane. it's so easy to visualize in your writing and really so sad to see jeonghan so consumed by his identity as a racing driver to basically ignore nayoung, and her sitting there for the whole hour anyway, and the killer last lines: Jeonghan turned to look at her from where his head was laying on the couch headrest. "I have a healthy relationship with you." / In the ensuing silence, Nayoung knew they both internally debated the merits of that claim. crazy crazy crazy!!!

this is so good and so true to the essence of the prompt, when i posted it i honestly thought no one would really want to write this type of narrative for svt so i'm thrilled that two people did :_) you're a genius as always!! idk honestly the wag life is not an easy one and i find it really interesting to see which rl relationships last. the lewis/nicole print... so thank you for combining these things together and for constantly feeding me!!

LITERALLY THE CHECK OUT HOW HARD I CAN CRY MEME RIGHT NOW... TT___TT op this is brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular TT___TT___TT u are so talented!!! jeonghan's casual sprawl and nayoung's closed-off posture... the glow on one side of the couch... you've captured so much and i'm so in awe and CRYING... sorry that this comment is so disjointed but i just keep looking at this and can't believe it exists!! thank you so much for this and sharing your lovely work ♡

aw i'm really glad u liked this T___T hands/maneuvers was one of the first fics i read when i started getting into svt (courtesy of risa's influence on my carathood) and coming back around years later and catching up on all the inyyjh you've written since has been really lovely.... just reread dwindling mercurial high again and omg my heart. they're really so fun to think about together and the slow and bitter decay of a long long relationship here was so potent, and that last scene so striking (even tho i know nothing about f1) that i really wanted to illustrate! thank YOU!!!
