I knew in some ways I am loved beyond my imagining, in a way I have never thought about before.
— Aubade, Yanyi
“You don't have to do this,” Jihoon says stiffly, scratching at the back of his neck, watching Soonyoung and Seokmin get set up in the bathroom.
Seokmin looks up from where Soonyoung has already taken out the razor with thinly veiled delight. “Yes, I do,” he says, all sincerity, like he couldn’t not fathom it.
Jihoon doesn’t have a response to that. Can’t. There’s a lump in his throat and a burning starting up in his eye. His heart squeezes, a gratitude too large to contain with words.
They sit in silence and watch Seokmin’s hair fall to the floor, dark tufts floating their way down, fluttering in mid-air, the buzzing of the razor briefly punctuated by Soonyoung’s oohing and aahing every time the machine doesn’t behave the way he expects. Which is often. Jihoon marvels at Soonyoung’s consistency — how he’s terrible with all devices, no matter the decade, Jihoon will never know.
“There,” Soonyoung says, self-satisfied, grinning at Seokmin in the mirror, who is very visibly anxious, twisting this way and that to inspect Soonyoung’s handiwork.
“It looks good,” Soonyoung reassures Seokmin, which of course achieved the opposite desired effect. Seokmin whirls around to look at Jihoon. He smiles despite himself.
“It looks good,” he promises softly. The answering beam he gets back from Seokmin in return nearly bowls him over.
By now, Jihoon should have gotten used to the earnestness in all the gestures that Seokmin carries. He doesn’t think he ever will. Maybe there’s a kind of poetry in that.
“My turn~” Seokmin sticks out his hand, his smile trespassing into mischievous territory. Soonyoung audibly gulps. Jihoon snickers.
Despite the teasing, Seokmin’s hands are gentle as they cradle Soonyoung’s head, turning it this way and that so he can carefully get every last bit of stubborn hair. Thank god they’d convinced their stylists to stop dying their hair by the time they were in their late twenties; the tufts that now rest on the bottom of their bathroom floor are strong and healthy.
It’ll grow back, Jihoon tells himself. They have time.
“There,” Seokmin leans back with a self-satisfied grin. Soonyoung squeals with glee, rubbing his now bald head with amazement, and immediately goes to put it on his Instagram Story.
There is significantly less hair on all of their heads than they started with. Jihoon is stuck between feeling horrified and incredibly fond — it’s always like that with these two.
“Now we match, hyung,” Seokmin grins, nudging Jihoon in the side with his elbow.
“We look like eggs,” Jihoon mutters, tugging on his ears.
“Organic or free range? White or brown?” Soonyoung asks, dropping his phone. He’s serious. Jihoon only knows because he’s spent practically his entire life with that idiot.
“No matter. I’d pick you up at the grocery store,” Seokmin intones solemnly. Soonyoung immediately brightens, grabbing the bit and running with it. Years and years of this have made him and Seokmin a well-oiled machine. They launch into their skit — an elderly couple who bicker like nobody else’s business at the supermarket, looking to buy eggs because somebody (Seokmin) forgot to buy them the last time they were at the store (just yesterday), which is why somebody else (Soonyoung) dragged them both here to make sure they get it this time. How else are they supposed to make their omelets?
It’s stupid and dumb and silly. Jihoon joins in immediately. He can be the carton of eggs they take home.
🍳
Soonyoung ends up packing him an enormous farewell box. It’s massive, bigger than the duffel he was planning on bringing. He and Seokmin end up struggling to carry it down the stairwell and to the car. Soonyoung had trailed slightly behind, offering directions that harmed nearly as much as they helped. They nearly behead someone coming up the stairs, much to Jihoon’s chagrin, Seokmin’s horror, and Soonyoung’s sheepish delight.
“They’ll make fun of me for this,” Jihoon warns him when they’ve finally loaded the stupid thing into the trunk. His muscles are slightly aching, which horrifies him. He’ll have to go to the gym more often while he’s there. “They’ll think my mom packed it for me or something.”
“So? Just say that your jagi got it for you,” Soonyoung declares. Jihoon makes a face of disgust on instinct. “You’re the first of the 96z to go to war,” he says dramatically, clasping his hands together. “I want you to be prepared. That’s why I got you this!”
“It’s not like you don’t know what to expect,” Jihoon tries. “Seungcheol and Jeonghan went last year. Seungcheol literally texted us every day about it.”
Soonyoung shakes his head, mouth stubborn. “But you’re different, Jihoon-ah. I wanted you to be extra extra prepared.”
Seokmin sighs exasperatedly and translates. “He put everything into the cart and I was the one who had to go through and veto things. He wanted to get you a handheld flamethrower.”
“Without me, who’s going to kill spiders for you? At least you’d have that to defend yourself with,” Soonyoung protests, sulking under his breath. “I still think Seokmin should’ve let me get it.”
“Thank you,” Jihoon laughs up at Seokmin, heart warmed.
He turns to Soonyoung, who is standing there eyes wide and hopeful. Jihoon pours his entire heart out into his fist. “Thank you,” he tells Soonyoung, reaching for his hand. Soonyoung doesn’t take it. Instead, he launches forward, wrangling Jihoon into a hug, peppering his face with a thousand wet, slobbery kisses.
“You’re gross,” Jihoon complains, pushing at Soonyoung’s face.
“I have to get in my Jihoonie time. You’re going to be gone for so long,” Soonyoung wails, which sparks something in Seokmin, as if just realizing it himself.
Suddenly, before Jihoon knows it, he’s being hugged and cuddled and squished to Seokmin’s and Soonyoung’s chests, cheek digging into their puffer jackets. In broad daylight, right in the middle of the street, where everyone can see.
He pretends to hate it the entire time.
🍳
“Hold on,” Seokmin grins, plopping Jihoon down at the counter. “Let’s have one last meal before you go. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, isn’t it?”
Seokmin winks, firing up the stove. “I have to feed you the most amazing delicious meal of your life so you’ll want to come back to us.”
Jihoon doesn’t know what to say. He hasn’t even had the food there yet, but nothing will ever come even close to the food Seokmin has cooked for him, or the jokes that Soonyoung tells, or the way that they have carved a space for him with so much love and care that sometimes Jihoon doesn’t know what to do with his hands. Doesn’t know how to give in return.
It’s been 15 years and counting. Jihoon will always want to come back to them.
“I have to come back here,” Jihoon says instead. “We just renewed our lease for another three years.”
For a moment, Jihoon wonders if he’s said the wrong thing. But Seokmin’s smile only grows broader in return. He knows. Jihoon thanks him, silently, for knowing.
“Here are the eggs!” Soonyoung crows, having seemingly materialized the carton from out of nowhere. Last time Jihoon checked (which was last night, he’d been up late looking for a late night snack) there hadn’t been any in the fridge. Which meant that Soonyoung had to have woken up early to grab them before all of this. Which makes Jihoon’s heart swell all that more.
He hops off the barstool and shuffles over to the stove, peering over at the pan.
There are three eggs frying, crackling on the hot skillet. Their eggshells sit further away, neatly tucked into the carton.
Seokmin presses a kiss gently to the top of Jihoon’s head, one hand cradling the back of hos neck, the other on the frying pan. Jihoon leans into it, enjoying the warmth.
“Here,” Seokmin smiles, transferring the eggs to a plate, alongside the sausages and hash browns Soonyoung had tossed into the air fryer (the only appliance he is allowed to touch in their kitchen). He slides it over to Jihoon. “Eat.”
Jihoon looks down. Sunny side up. Just the way he likes them.
Re: [FILL] how do you like your eggs?
seoksoonhoon has always kinda been a overly self-indulgent ot3 for me and i even have a tumblr tag for Things that remind me of them. aubade by yanyi is always one of the first things to have come to mind. so i would like to start this off by thanking you for filling in this prompt
when you say the dynamic is jihoon and his two idiots it is genuinely so true. some form of exasperated fondness.... sigh
you also capture jihoon:
(“I have to come back here,” Jihoon says instead. “We just renewed our lease for another three years.”
For a moment, Jihoon wonders if he’s said the wrong thing. But Seokmin’s smile only grows broader in return. He knows. Jihoon thanks him, silently, for knowing.)
in a way that makes me feel.... something at least. the unsaid the unspoken is genuinely what he does best. leaving the implications up to intepretation. and like. Yeah.
the characters and the traits of Them are equally Something (eg: soonyoung posting his egg head on instagram story) (eg: constant references to soonyoung's technical inadequacy) (eg: jihoons faux disgust at them) (eg: seokmin's.... seokminisms. how do you say it. the brightness and love...)
—and seokmin being the one to veto the Cart (horrorful) of soonyoung's desires... the Exasperated Fondness just stored in it all... is so endearing to me. god!!!!!!
the tenderness stored in this short piece is one that i will keep close to my heart, truly. again; thank you for this piece. thank you thank you thank you.

"When I see the fork pierce through the skin and let out a river of gold on top of steaming rice, suddenly I am overwhelmed with tenderness for all my past selves who woke up with determination each day so I can arrive at that moment, standing barefoot, hip leaning against the counter."
-Marginalia on "Aubade by Yanyi", by T. De Los Reyes
The apartment is still there when Jihoon gets back. He's alone despite everything, time slip-stitching the rest of his members into other corners of the country. He dons a bucket hat and anonymity and hops on the subway, duffle bag looped over his shoulder.
The sky is a gray wash, sunlight peeking out between the clouds like slivers of ginger. So unexpectedly bright. He snaps a photo, sends it to Soonyoung and Seokmin.
Seokmin had barely waited a year after Jihoon and Soonyoung to enlist himself, claiming that he wanted to get it over with sooner. And Jihoon hadn't said anything, not when he was counting the days when he'd make it back to the two of them. But he hadn't wanted Seokmin to see him, either, not the hard days, when he wrapped blue starched sheets around his shoulders and prayed for a broken bone, so that he would not have to rise with the sun.
And so he had talked to the two of them over chat, and rarely in person, taking breaks with them and holding onto the memories like golden coins.
Here is the pearl-cautious center of him. The part of him that loves them but still wraps his wounds in silence.
Soonyoung comes back in two months time. Seokmin ten after. Jihoon's anticipation is so bright it hurts to look at.
Jihoon is pretty sure Seungcheol and Jeonghan had stopped by the apartment before he got there: despite being closed for months, there is no dust to be seen. His fridge, when he checks it, is fully stocked. Maybe it was Seokmin who prompted them to stop by, Jeonghan always weak for Seokmin's pleading. Or maybe they had thought of the gesture themselves, laughing as they imagined his expression, marveling at the clean countertops. The absent consideration lances straight through him. Bright bright bright.
He runs a gentle hand over the back of his head as he contemplates lunch, eventually pulling out a carton of eggs and starting rice. He had shaved his hair one more time before he left. Sentiment, lingering. Jihoon's never been the type to let things go quickly. Split him open like an egg and find that golden-yolk center, that love so tender.
He eats his lunch standing up, and it's good. And it's enough. And he's watching the sunlight inch itself over the sill of their window—their window—and he's taking the first real breath he's had in months.
And just like that, his phone chimes with a message returned.
(please forgive any inaccuracies re: how exiting from the military works)
Re: [REMIX] sunny side up
i have legit shoved my face into my hands im smiling so brightly…
Here is the pearl-cautious center of him. The part of him that loves them but still wraps his wounds in silence.
Soonyoung comes back in two months time. Seokmin ten after. Jihoon's anticipation is so bright it hurts to look at. the motif of brightness and warmth throughout this piece was just so!!!!! YEAH!!!!!! jihoon has this tendency to be quiet but really when you look at him he’s so loud in the actions he performs (his yearning, his laughs, the tendency to cling, acts of service) he is like a little pearl… im going to incorporate this into every version of him i write now thanks for that
oh and when he thinks maybe jeongcheol had stopped by to clean the apartment and stock the fridge T___T CRYING theres no greater act of love i think… plus this paragraph that speaks so well on jihoon’s character/feelings as a whole:
Sentiment, lingering. Jihoon's never been the type to let things go quickly. Split him open like an egg and find that golden-yolk center, that love so tender.
he is so good here i’m so proud of him for trying. they’ll be there soon little guy!!!!! be brave!!!!!
thank u so much for writing. its perfect. and exactly what i envisioned for these three.
Re: [REMIX] sunny side up
your words somehow hang so interestingly (fragmented) (and i mean this in a Positive Way) through this work and really tie up the entire feel of what you were trying to portray... things like (Sentiment, lingering. Jihoon's never been the type to let things go quickly. Split him open like an egg and find that golden-yolk center, that love so tender.) is so brilliant to me...
i always have a soft spot for certain lines i read in fic and that is going to be there... the idea of Lingering is so powerful....... wow. the emotions!!!!!!! are Feeling. wild.
you expanded the egg metaphor so brilliantly. so brilliant so PACKED.... in a way that makes it have... more depth. i just want to hang this on my wall and worship the pure wit behind all the different metaphors. this changed me and so wonderfully so pleasantly im running out of adverbs and adjectives the state of my incoherency is as usual apparent oh man. ohhhhh Man.
i think ive always had a Thing for enlistment fic because of it as an entire process, because of the fact that i am a peculiarly positive person—from the preparation to the sendoff to the reunion it all contains aspects that can be so sweet and so looked into.. and you did just that with this wonderful continuation. thank you so much really... i treasure this all a lot
[REMIX] so this is love?

i am pushing the Egg even further… or trying to LOL.... i dont have the metaphorical eye for writing effective metaphors but i do have an understanding of protein? which in this case overlap!
TIL my narrative voice fluctuates a lot (alarming)

Jihoon spends a borderline obsessive amount of time brushing up on his cooking while waiting for Soonyoung to come home. He flips through his mental catalogue of recipes, many of which Seokmin has taught him, many of which have his emotions melded to it like a gold alloy.
Within it, one thing leaps into Jihoon’s memory, as it always does with his lovers; a constant reminder of the liquid light that they’ve so graciously engulfed him in.
This dish, a humble salmon eggs benedict, is one Soonyoung loves so much that Jihoon had asked Seokmin for a gracious favour: make it for him while I’m away.
On one particularly hard day—after carrying a 40kg deadweight through a twelve kilometre hike—Seokmin had sent a picture of Soonyoung, cheeks stuffed full with love and tenderness. It brought him solace, despite the desire clawing at his heart to wipe away the yolk around the corners of his pink lips, despite the aching of his back and his arms and his body.
Wish you were here, Seokmin says. The heartache grows a little more vivid.
As protein strands in eggs unfurl during heating—his heart relaxes, going limp against the unstoppable force of Seokmin’s warmth. He takes out a slab of salmon—bread in the airfryer in the midst of being toasted to perfection. Soonyoung’s discharge happens at twelve noon today. He prepares the tray of eggs—new, ready to be used for weeks to come.
Hopefully, Soonyoung will be back in time for lunch.
(He is.)
(He calls Jihoon jagiya with the biggest smile on his face when he appears at the door.)
(Of course, he forgets his keys. That's why Jihoon is there—is it not?)
/
It never feels right to watch anime without Seokmin.
He’s the one who asked them three to watch Spy x Family, anyway. Stuck at episode 13, it just never felt correct to continue. Jihoon and Soonyoung try, still, revert to their routine pre-Seokmin; watching animes they watched together with practised ease.
Having experienced a life where Seokmin laughs and cries with them while watching these simple cartoons, however, the lack of it now, leaves a devastatingly empty place where sunshine used to stream in. Intangible sunshine, Jihoon can find anywhere. A certain Lee Seokmin, however, the keeper of gold, is... somewhere unreachable, for now.
Jihoon sends Seokmin a picture of Soonyoung crying to the television, the show on it blurred. (Seokmin's never liked spoilers. Regardless, they'll watch it again, together.) Waiting for u <3 Four more months.
/
Soonyoung forgets Seokmin’s discharge date.
All things considered—choreographing, preparing for the SVT Leaders comeback, variety show appearances, photoshoots, Soonyoung has been tired. Thankfully, Jihoon wakes him up early enough. “Get Guatemalan coffee beans for Seokmin. His discharge time is estimated to be at ten.”
Soonyoung shoots up so quickly it’s almost comical.
“WHAT?!”
[ TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES. PLEASE STAND BY. ]
Ah. Jihoon can swear the most important things are always forgotten. Like keys to your own house. Or the way Seokmin cooks his eggs just right—the tenderness of the yolk only determined by heart.
Seokmin is barrelled into immediately (by Soonyoung) the second he steps into the door—hair already grown back to its fluffy state from the last time Jihoon saw him.
His sweater paws pat Soonyoung’s head, their bodies relaxing into each others like putty. Jihoon’s eyes are teary himself—who wouldn’t, when a part of yourself finally comes home?
Melded together. Inseparable by physical methods. This is precious golden too: the yolk of the eggs of Seokmin's sunny side ups, Soonyoung's newly dyed hair, Jihoon's heart, bursting with light.
The warm cup of coffee—made with Guatemalan coffee beans and an ounce of love—is clasped tightly in his hands.
“Yeobo! My sexy man, my beloved,” Soonyoung cries in an endless litany, and Seokmin laughs wetly through his tears, through replies of Jagiya, Young, dear. And this—this is love, isn’t it? The name and the person you so easily call love, the reminder, always?
Jihoon thinks about all the names of Seokmin in his heart. The ones they share; yeobo, sexy man, Kyeomza. Love, darling. My partner. My light. What does it amount to?
Seokmin’s sweet voice calls, hopeful and beautiful and everything in between. “Wooza? Is that coffee made by you or by Hoshi-hyung? Did you finally teach him how to use the coffee machine after he split the coffee powder last time?”
(Soonyoung lets out an indignant noise between a sob and a protest, too endeared to smack Seokmin in the face.)
(That's a lie. Soonyoung smacks him with his lips. Jihoon joins soon after.)
/
Coming together again in the way eggs coagulate to solidify, a tone of finality matching the hardened state it becomes, Jihoon wants this love to remain permanent, lying in a bed perfect for the three of them, in the same way an egg takes the shape of the pan.
A king-sized bed was always meant for three, it seems. The novelty of it will never fade.
///
p.s: i also need to get off my ass and write more so ❤ thank u for the food for the inspiration to tie this up in one nice bundle. really.

this whole thing was so sunny bouncy lovely warm but this little bit especially felt like such a perfect encapsulation of their dynamic, i just adored it
