A/N hello op! was scrolling through the prompts looking for something to write and found this! i don't know how coherent it is, given that it took an hour with little editing to write this, but i hope you enjoy!

The first time Soonyoung heard the music, he’d shaken his head and sailed away.

He lost two sailors that day to the disembodied voice echoing from the mist and the unrelenting sea.

Soonyoung had simply forced wax into the rest of the crew members’ ears and steered them clear of that strait for a whole moon.

The forlorn song remained picking at the edges of his heart, though. Like an ache inside his chest had awakened.

/

Jihoon submerges himself in waves and casts his song out into the sea, hook and bait, everyday for a whole moon. The sailor does not come by.

He actively begins varying the tunes, from lullaby to aria to singspiel to rhapsody to sea shanty. Tosses them out into the ubiquitous rolling mist like skipping stones. And usually, just like when skipping stones hit water and sink, there’s the following splash of water, indicative of bodies flung into the currents, propelled by an implanted desire to find the source of the music and pass moons by while listening.

Everyday, for a whole moon, there is nothing but the slosh of waves.

When the moon sharpens itself into a curved point again, Jihoon gives up hope.

/

Soonyoung takes his free day to nudge his ship back into the perpetually fogged strait he’s been circumventing. He hadn’t wanted to go back.

Sirens, perhaps the most prevalent figures in sea mythology, sing to lure victims, floundering and gasping, nails dug deep in the sand, to their shores. For what purpose, mankind has not been able to successfully investigate. Soonyoung just knows what he’s been taught: avoid sirens at all costs. Soonyoung’s mother had been abundantly glad when she’d found out that her son was siren-immune, although all that trait has ever done is erode the edges of Soonyoung’s caution.

And now, against all of his teachings, Soonyoung is heading straight into siren realm.

/

When a ship familiar by presence docks at the beach, Jihoon is stunned for the first time in his immortal life.

The figure that descends from the ship has a crown of silver hair and mist translucent at his feet.

“What are you doing here?”

/

Soonyoung feels his brow furrow. The siren is nothing like he’d expected. He’s small, blonde hair fluffy across his forehead, against his nape. His eyes are shadowed like the depths of the ocean and wide with confusion. He looks harmless.

But looks can deceive; Soonyoung can feel his power suffused in the mist that clings to his skin. He has to tread carefully; there is loose sand underfoot, literally and figuratively.

“Is it so bad that I like hearing you sing?” Soonyoung keeps his voice conversational, borderline flippant. He doesn’t mention how he’d picked up the undercurrent of decade-deep longing in his song the first time he heard it. He doesn’t mention how the loneliness that had sharpened the music reverberates every night in Soonyoung’s own chest.

The siren looks unconvinced, his blue see-through shirt billowing in the breeze. Soonyoung tries for a smile, hums a shaky, off-tune melody under his breath.

He sees the siren wince and grins, letting him take over the melody.

That night, he learns that his name is Jihoon.

/

The sailor – Soonyoung, Jihoon now knows – starts docking at the beach every night the moon rounds and grows swollen in the sky.

The air swells with music between them and Jihoon learns the taste of companionship for the first time in centuries.
