Examples

Minghao + Ocean Vuong
The most beautiful part of your body
is where it's headed. & remember,
loneliness is still time spent
with the world.

Ocean Vuong - night sky with exit wounds

Hoshi/Anyone; "Beauty is terror"
Thinking about these two quotes together and the idea of on/off-stage personas:

"Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful we tremble before it. And what could be more terrifying or beautiful, to the Greeks to to our own, than to lose control completely?" - Donna Tartt, the Secret Histories

"I am calm in everyday life but when I put on my in-ear device and step on stage, I can feel the tension and hear the cheers getting louder as the music gets louder. When the staff tells me it's time to step on stage, I feel something boil inside me. I feel it steaming inside and I think I have to give a burst of something, spill what is inside me." - Hoshi in Hit the Road Ep. 04

Any ship; "It's been so many years"
Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
This is old Tom Frost
And I am calling long distance
Don't worry 'bout the cost.
'Cause it's been forty years or more
Now Martha please recall
Meet me out for coffee
Where we'll talk about it all.

Tom Watts - Martha

“Tell me you’re not texting him again,” Minghao says, with more exasperation in his tone than Mingyu feels is necessary.

“I’m not texting him again,” Mingyu says at the precise moment his phone screen lights up with the name Seokminnie. Minghao says nothing. He looks at Mingyu over the top of the round rims of his glasses. Mingyu is almost certain he got the glasses for this exact reason, that if he stole them off Minghao’s face he’d find lenses with no prescription.

“He’s texting me,” Mingyu whines.

“Are you replying to him?” Minghao asks. His voice is pointedly steady, even. It’s the voice he uses when he wants to point out that Mingyu is being an idiot without using the word idiot.

“It would be rude not to,” Mingyu sulks, flipping his phone so the screen faces down. Minghao takes a calming sip of herbal tea.

“Remind me,” Minghao says, holding up three fingers, “What were your new year’s resolutions again?”

“Try yoga,” Mingyu says, and Minghao puts a finger down, “No more smoking,” another finger, “No more Seokmin. I know.”

The night before, Seungkwan had passed out little papers for everyone to write down their resolutions before midnight. The plan was for Seungkwan to collect the papers and keep them until the next new year’s eve party, so they could all see how spectacularly they had failed their goals over the course of the year. Mingyu had, regrettably, announced his resolutions to the entire room, being absolutely certain that he would keep them, given that 2022 would be his year. The year of Mingyu not making the same mistakes over and over again.

“It’s the year of Mingyu,” Minghao reminds him, seriously.

“Year of Mingyu,” he agrees weakly, raising his coffee cup in an approximation of a toast.

***

The year of Mingyu, he would like the record to show, is both successful and fruitful for an entire week. He signs up for yoga classes on Monday and attends his first one on Wednesday. He throws out his cigarettes, including the packs he has to dig up from hidden spots around his room. He does not text Seokmin, and it’s only partially because he triple texted him at the cafe with Minghao and never got a reply back.

Things begin to unravel at the seven day mark. He had signed himself up for an 8am yoga class on Saturday and, miraculously, had actually woken up and gotten himself there in time. To do yoga. On a Saturday morning. He was feeling particularly impressed with himself, especially after catching sight of himself in the wall-length mirrors of the studio in his new year new me workout clothes he’d bought on an end of year sale.

He’s busy admiring the way the t-shirt stretches over his shoulders as he rolls out his mat, so it takes him a minute to take in the rest of the room and the fact that someone behind him is looking directly at him through the mirror.

“No fucking way,” he says, turning around and letting the top of the mat hit the floor with a thump. “What are you doing here?”

“What do you think?” Seokmin asks, looking irritatingly good in the same sleeveless shirt he’s been wearing to the gym for years.

“This is my yoga class,” Mingyu whines, recognising the absurdity as it comes out of his mouth, but honestly standing by the sentiment.

“It’s mine too,” Seokmin replies defensively, “I was here on Thursday.”

“I was here on Wednesday.”

Seokmin rolls his eyes, as if he didn’t start it, “Who cares. It’s a public class. Trying yoga was my new year’s resolution.”

“It’s my new year’s resolution,” Mingyu says, loud enough that the instructor pauses setting up at the front of the class to shush them.

“You’re being stupid,” Seokmin hisses, “Turn around. And don’t fucking look at me.”

The class is significantly less restful than his first one. Mingyu keeps losing track of the steady breathing pattern the instructor taught them at the start. He is not entering a state of mindfulness. He doesn’t try to look - he’s trying to concentrate on deep breathing, thanks - but Seokmin’s mat happens to be placed exactly where his eyes naturally fall whenever he looks up.

Stop looking, Seokmin’s reflection mouths, holding a Warrior II pose which unfortunately emphasises the strength of his thighs. Mingyu wants to mouth something back, ideally go fuck yourself, but Seokmin’s already closed his eyes. His chest perfectly matches the same rise and fall the instructor is demonstrating again at the head of the class. Asshole.

When the class ends, Seokmin briskly rolls up his mat and speedwalks past Mingyu like he’s trying to beat him to the showers. It’s fucking ridiculous given the fact that there’s at least 15 cubicles, and even more ridiculous that Mingyu still finds himself speedwalking to catch up. When he gets out, Seokmin is gone and his own gym bag has been pushed off the bench.

There was never any need to write this down on a list. All he needed to do, Mingyu now recalls, is to spend more than five minutes in a room with Seokmin and remember exactly why he should delete his number.

***

Seokminnie 10:32am
Good class today
Too bad you couldn’t make it
But not everyone can commit to their resolutions

The messages are followed up minutes later by a mirror selfie clearly taken directly after class. The tips of Seokmin’s hair are damp, pushed out of his face in a way that looks haphazard but probably wasn’t. He’s standing with his shoulders pressed out to their full breadth, arms flexed just a little.

Mingyu is not aggravated. He has been practicing deep breathing. He does, however, change into his gym clothes and spend the next 17 minutes taking his own mirror selfie. It’s some of his best work.

Mingyu 11:57am
I worked out at home

Seokmin doesn’t reply, probably because he’s too busy furiously jerking off. Which Mingyu also does, for unrelated reasons, because Sundays are meant for self love and not for yoga classes with men he never wants to see again.

***

Mingyu does, unfortunately, see Seokmin again, and again, and again. Being completely honest he doesn’t think the yoga thing is going to work out. It’s been four weeks of regular classes and he still cannot get the breathing right. He has not successfully been able to clear his mind even once. He’s determined to stick to his resolution for at least a month before he gives up, though, and more importantly he refuses to cede his territory.

They vie for the best position with the clearest view to the instructor. They vie to be first to the showers. They vie to be first out of the showers. The activities surrounding the workout are frankly more vigorous than the workout itself.

“Your Downward Dog is all wrong, you know,” Seokmin says, rubbing at his wet hair with a towel. “Your knees don’t straighten all the way.”

He’s changed into a pair of jeans, but hasn’t put on a shirt yet. Mingyu watches the way the muscles of his stomach shift.

“Like you’d know,” Mingyu says, sulkily. His gaze moves away from Seokmin’s stomach and finds the reflection of his back and shoulders in the bathroom mirror, which Mingyu is only incidentally watching because he has to look at the mirror in order to fix his hair.

“I could show you back at my place,” Seokmin offers, voice deceptively light, “I have a spare yoga mat. And Soonyoung is out right now.”

Mingyu nods slowly. Seokmin is still not wearing a shirt.

“We would need a quiet atmosphere to practice properly,” Mingyu says.

“Right, exactly,” Seokmin agrees, “So…?”

The year of Mingyu - now renamed to the month of Mingyu - ends on January 29, which is the same length as some Februaries, so it still counts as a full month. He hasn’t smoked a single cigarette, and his regular yoga practice means he’s able to hook his legs over Seokmin’s shoulders without a single pinch in his muscles.

SCREAMING YELLING SHAKING. i absolutely LOVE this. you've literally nailed the dynamic - seokmin telling mingyu not to look at him, mingyu looking at him anyway, the back and forth that quickly turns into seokmin inviting mingyu over, it's genius!!! thank you so much for writing this is incredible!!!

IT IS THE YEAR OF MINGYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! babe please this was so funny and charming and good ;; there are so many good lines idek where to start, but first of all minghao literally looking over his glasses rims (purchased specifically for this purpose) at mingyu... excellent. mingyu and seokmin having the exact same new years resolutions... also excellent. the way mingyu cannot stop staring at seokmin even though (because) he says he hates him so much.... excellent!!! mingyu admiring himself in his new gym clothes and also sending a faked gym selfie to seokmin... PLEASE he is so mingyu. he is soooooo mingyu.

Being completely honest he doesn’t think the yoga thing is going to work out. It’s been four weeks of regular classes and he still cannot get the breathing right. He has not successfully been able to clear his mind even once. idk why this made me laugh so hard but it did, christ. babe of course your mind isn't clear!!! PULL IT TOGETHER (he won't)

The year of Mingyu - now renamed to the month of Mingyu - ends on January 29, which is the same length as some Februaries, so it still counts as a full month. IT'S THE SAME LENGTH OF SOME FEBRUARIES!!!! it counts!!!!!

honestly this was such a delight start to finish!!!!!!! thank you for working so hard on it and for sharing it with us ♡♡♡

this was sooo fun to read!! i love how childish their bickering is but how serious they are about it until they aren't. The year of Mingyu - now renamed to the month of Mingyu - ends on January 29, which is the same length as some Februaries, so it still counts as a full month. is so perfect. thank you for sharing :D
