back when the avengers movies were the at the height of pop culture fame, it somehow became important to figure out which one you were most like, or at least which one was your favorite. jihoon named black panther, mostly because he thought the movie was the coolest. junhui said groot, and refused to explain further.

captain america, seungcheol had said. it's not hard to come up with a laundry list of reasons why: he's strong, handsome, and has a clear sense of justice. admirable traits in any man.

mingyu nodded. you're dependable, he'd said. i'd always trust you to have my back in a fight.

honestly, i think you're more like the hulk, joshua had laughed, and everyone else did with him, seungcheol nudging him in the side with an eye-roll.

so maybe seungcheol has a short fuse sometimes. it's gotten better with age, not so hair-trigger to push someone around when they get on his nerves, but he still has his moments. he's still a little too prone to acting first and thinking later.

they'd ribbed him for it all, as groups of young men often do. he could do this all day, joshua laughed when seungcheol asked for a fifth arm wrestling round when they had downtime. korea's ass, jeonghan would say, groping him in the hallway. hulk-coups strikes again, jihoon would cackle when seungcheol body-slammed chan onto the sofa after too many shots of soju and too much mouthing off.

as time went on and marvel movies faded from the cultural zeitgeist, the comments died down. and eventually, they grew up. life moved on. seungcheol went from seeing them every day to once a week to once a month to maybe three times a year, if that. he's not lonely, and he's perfectly fine without them, but there's something different about having to make plans with someone four months in advance to get beers instead of poking your head into their room and asking if they want to head out.

but there's a part of him that never fully forgot about it. sure, no one's bringing it up anymore, and he isn't going to be the one to do it, but if seungcheol's going to try and live his life by some kind of creed, cap's isn't too bad of one. he tries to live a fairly decent, upright life most of the time. even though everyone else scattered across the globe, he always tries to find some way to bring them all together. at the very least, he always wants to be a steady, stable figure in case anyone needs him.

it's this that has him answering the phone when it blares in the dead of night, fumbling for it on his nightstand. 3:26, the screen says.

he can barely get out a muffled hello when he starts getting talked at.

"hyung," comes seokmin's voice, high and frantic, "hyung, something happened, someone--soonyoung--there's blood everywhere, i don't--"

his heart stops. he hasn't heard from seokmin in months, and this certainly isn't how he'd expected to hear from him again. "seokmin," seungcheol interrupts. his voice doesn't sound like his own. "tell me where you are."

seokmin rattles off an address that seungcheol recognizes as not too far from where he lives. it's also not particularly close to where seokmin--or soonyoung--lives, for that matter. he'll figure that part out later.

"should i call the police?" seokmin whispers, as if saying in quietly will make it take up less space, make it less real.

"not until i get there. i'll be there soon. don't call me again."

seungcheol hangs up the phone and wonders what it is he's just agreed to.

this, seungcheol thinks, with no small amount of insanity, as he leaps into his car, puts it in reverse, phone still on the bed in his apartment. this is his avengers moment.

what he doesn't know, though, is if he's cap or the hulk in this scenario.
