Jeonghan got in the car, locking the doors and putting the key in the ignition. It had been a while since he'd visited his friend, and he missed him. He couldn't have imagined ever not feeling Seokmin's absence on the stage, but as the years had gone by, they had grown to close around the wound. It wasn't so gaping, so raw anymore. They'd all pulled on their weaknesses and pushed their strengths until even though it took all twelve of them, they could play his roles. Jeonghan sang a little higher, Vernon laughed a little more, Jun brushed up his cooking skills. Nothing could replace him. But they had learnt how to work without him.
"Hyung!" Seokmin called from the doorway of a barn and Jeonghan slammed the door behind him, jogging over to— "Don't touch me, I just had to help a cow birth. Wait, let me wash up. It's good to see you, hyung. How's everything? I've been busy lately, haven't been able to follow you much."
Jeonghan took a step back, "We're good. Won an award last night, for performance. Channie's solo album is nearly ready, Cheol-ah is releasing a solo track tonight and Hao has that contract with—"
"That's great, hyung, but I asked how things were, not for a status report–" Seokmin turned back from washing up and smiled at him– "What was the last thing you saw that made you stop and think about life? Hm? Have you made any legos lately?" He turned to the house and Jeonghan followed him, quiet.
"Things are good. Usual stress levels, but we're good. I made a cake yesterday–" Jeonghan hurried to catch up with Seokmin and slip in before the farmhouse door closed– "and it was edible!"
Seokmin turned to him with a grin, "Was it really?"
"Jun said it was nice?"
"Jun is a lying liar who lies." Jeonghan just hugged him instead of putting up with that. Seokmin laughed and hugged him back, so much stronger than he'd ever have been on stage, but so much more settled in himself.
They drank two pots of tea, sitting there catching up on each other's lives. Seokmin had three new calves, Hwan, Geon and Kyu, a new hen for eggs– ( "She has the combined personality of hungry Seungcheol, tired Seungkwan and angry Minghao. And she tries to bite me four times a day. But the eggs are lovely.") And they were thinking about getting a big pond put in around the back for "yellow ducks." After the second pot, Seokmin brought out a tart, with fresh cream and served Jeonghan up a slice that he took a double take at. "Hyung, eat it."
"It's too much, Seokmin, really—"
"Come on, I'm not going to tell." Seokmin pushed it closer to him and picked up his own fork and Jeonghan looked at it. It looked delicious.
"This is delicious."
"Thanks, hyung. Now, tell me about you. You you. Not the group you." Jeonghan swallowed his forkful, "I'm good. Sleeping well, eating well–" Seokmin raised an eyebrow and Jeonghan looked at him– "I am! I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die, promise!"
"Okay, okay!"
"Making friends, maybe making more than friends–" Jeonghan tapped his nose– "I'm not sure yet."
"Tell me when you are, hyung~ I want the gossip~"
"I'll ring you."
"You do that, hyung. You do that."
Afternoon faded to dusk and Jeonghan stood reluctantly. "That time already?" Seokmin asked, standing with him.
Jeonghan nodded, "I'm afraid it is. Back to it."
"It was nice seeing you, hyung. Really. Visit more often."
"You too! All our apartments are always open to you–" Jeonghan squeezed him tight– "You know that."
"Ah hyung. I do, I do. But the farm is hard to leave." Jeonghan squeezed tighter in place of saying anything. At one point he had been hard to leave too.
The stars saw him home. The reflective walls of the elevator saw him up. Soonyoung saw him through the door. "How was he?"

"I'm happy for him."
Jeonghan leaned onto Soonyoung's shoulder, "So am I."
