Round 2: Alternate Universes

About

Sometimes its the characters that move us, but sometimes we fall in love with the the world behind the story. Something transformative occurs when we place the characters we love in an unfamiliar world, like the light has shone on a new side and we're seeing them anew.

Run to the classics; revisit the magic of Harry Potter, the heart-punch of a Pacific Rim drift, the warmth of a Coffee Shop AU. Or maybe dig your fingers into a story that blew your mind - Battle Royale, The Raven Cycle, Interstellar - or demand better from a book that let you down (The Poppy War fin- mmph). Perhaps! You might combine two of your fandoms for maximum joy (Haikyuu and Tennis adjacent mutuals, I'm looking at you.)

The possibilities are literally endless. Do it for the aesthetic, do it for the drama.

Examples

Wonhui x MDZS/Untamed
Wonwoo as Lan Wanji, Jun as Wei Wuxian (Minghao as Jiang Cheng?). I want a cast that feels betrayed and shocked at Junhui's demise but then gradually learning his reasons behind it.

Mingyu/Seungkwan Debating AU
Imagine them as third speakers in the high school circuit. Rivals! Mortal Enemies! Prepared case summaries derailing into personal attacks, and then when their coach calls them out on it they become passive aggressive e.g. "there are major flaws in the opposition's arguments..."

Jeonghan as Mal from Inception
Any Jeonghan ship will do. I just want him to chaotically haunt a person while being sexy about it.

Permission to remix: Yes

A/N: yes i accidentally got myself with my own prompt... this is based on the script of the future past 2 dlc from fire emblem awakening so there is some dialogue taken verbatim. action is not my strength, but... yeah. thank you to ten for looking this over for me [seungkwan = inigo, chan = owain. hansol healer. mingyu wolfboy]

***

A legion of the undead approaches from the rear of the group, smelling human flesh. A rancid wind blows past them. Chan shivers.

“Mingyu can run it,” Seungkwan says, assuming authority, “Hansol, guard him.”

Hansol nods, healing staff in one hand, Mingyu’s in the other. Mingyu does not let his face betray emotions as he transforms, clutching the satchel of stones tightly against his chest. All four of them are already covered in blood wounds. There’s a particularly nasty bite mark on Seungkwan’s shoulder that Hansol’d only half-patched up before they had to run again.

In between them and the castle Ylisstol is five miles of Risen territory. There Seungcheol is waiting to receive two of the five gemstones needed to activate the only shield capable of withstanding the fell dragon. After that he will take the sword Falchion in hand and risk his life to slay him. In other words, they are literally the hope of the earth.

Under his breath Chan says something about how he’s got more stamina and Seungkwan rolls his eyes.

“You know I’m not trying to insult you, we just have to do our part, that’s all,” he says. “Seungcheol assigned us to this team so that we could protect Mingyu, not steal his job because we’re too confident in ourselves to realize any of us could die today, no matter how good at running we are. Look at how much farther ahead of us they’ve made it already, Mingyu can carry Hansol on his back.”

“Fine, whatever,” Chan says. “Stray Risen incoming on your left.” Seungkwan lobs his tomahawk at one and it hits him square in the neck. Chan stabs the other in the gut and is nearly choked in the neck before the parasites leave their host.

“Just because you won races at the castle’s athletic festival when you were a kid doesn’t mean you’re all that,” Seungkwan says, panting.

“Neither does winning jousting tournaments against Jeonghan in the finals,” Chan retorts. “Him getting there was a fluke and he didn’t even try.”

“That was one year!

“Look,” Chan says, ignoring his glares, “we have to cross the bridge.”

The cliffs approach ahead - on the way to retrieve the stones they’d taken the low route, but there’s no time for that anymore, and the only way to cross without pegasi is a long rope bridge. To fall into the depths below would be a death sentence.

Behind them, the horde of Risen is so much closer than it’d been five minutes ago.

“I don’t think we can make it across before they start rampaging,” Seungkwan says, looking at the scene before them.

Chan wipes sweat from his forehead, the taste of iron ringing in his mouth. “The closer we let the Risen get to them, the harder it’ll be to keep us all safe. At least Mingyu and Hansol are almost to the other side, but Hansol doesn’t even have a weapon.”

“Well, yeah,” Seungkwan says, a little bit hopelessly. “Hansol is good at his job though—”

“Stop talking about jobs,” Chan snaps. “It’s the end of the world, we don’t need to specialize.”

“You don’t think you were put on this mission for a reason?”

Chan slows down just to look at him.

“Don’t stop running, you idiot,” Seungkwan shouts, without looking back.

From behind Seungkwan looks strong, muscles defined in a way Chan hadn’t ever really noticed. When he thinks about it, it’s been like this since they were young— Seungkwan gives a feeling of security, protection, to anyone who merely stands next to him. Chan would never admit it now but maybe if things were better and they had the free time to give speeches about who they looked up to, Chan would call Seungkwan his hero.

“You should cross the bridge,” Chan says. “I’ll stay.”

Now Seungkwan can’t help but freeze in his tracks. “You’ll do WHAT?”

“I’ll fight,” Chan says. “You tease me all the time about being cocky but deep down you know I can fight, and I’ve fought multiple Risen at once. I wasn’t on Seungcheol’s guard for two years doing nothing. And once you make it to the other side, I’ll cut the bridge down.”

“I can’t do that,” Seungkwan says, facing him. Begging him.

“Do you want me to die,” he asks slowly, “or do you want all of us to die?”

“You don’t think there’s any other way?”

“There isn’t,” Chan says affirmatively. “This gives us the best chances of survival. And by us I mean... everyone who’s waiting for us in Ylisstol. I was top of the Military Tactics class my year, too,” he adds to give some encouragement, but Seungkwan isn’t smiling at all.

“Chan...”

Chan puts on the bravest face he can muster. It comes easier than he thought it would. “I know this isn’t going to be easy for you, Seungkwan. But I really am glad that I got to spend my last moments with you. Now go! We’ve wasted so much time. You have to catch up to Mingyu and Hansol, and protect them. You have to survive.”

The mob of Risen thunders down the path behind them, surrounding the cliff’s edge. Seungkwan just stares at him.

Chan can only keep up his front of bravery for so long before he starts shaking. “Um... Seungkwan? This is the part where you go.”

“I’m sorry, Chan. I can’t do it.”

Seungkwan turns to the bridge posts and with large, wide swings of his axe, he cuts through the rope so that the heavy wooden planks crash against the cliff on the other side, the impact echoing through the valley.

In the distance Mingyu and Hansol hear that sound and turn around in horror.

Chan, too, is frozen in shock. “Seungkwan... why would you do that?!”

“You know why!”

“But my epic speech... We didn’t both have to die!”

Seungkwan takes him by the shoulders. “Your idea, while tactically sound or whatever you want to call it, is unquestionably ridiculous. What am I supposed to tell everyone else? That the baby of the army who we practically raised ourselves decided to put on a brave face and sacrifice himself, and I just let him?”

“I’m— I’m not a baby,” Chan interjects, stammering, but there’s absolutely no bite to his words.

“No, it’s just not going to happen,” Seungkwan continues. “They’d never let me go for it, and I’d never let myself go either. It’d be unforgivable. I don’t care what you have to say.”

“But we’re going to die, Seungkwan!” The Risen close in around them, and Chan raises his sword.

“Stop,” Seungkwan says, looking Chan in the eyes, the most fearless person he’s ever seen. “We’re not going to go down without a fight. We can save the world together. Don't you want to be there to see it?”

A/N: the next chan line goes “heh i guess i was too legendary to die anyway”

because it would be tasty: the other teams are 96z as seungcheol’s guard / jihanseokhao for the other stones

ahhh thank u so much!! im glad the physical parts of it came thru well im lowkey terrified of accidentally writing scientific/medical inaccuracies into injury fic LOL. tbh i think i leaned too heavily on the idea that the reader would have prior knowledge of both pacrim and svt when writing this so i have no idea how it would hit to someone who's not familiar with either, but i'm glad it still worked for you! tysm for reading!

oooh you really took your own bait haha i'm glad you're writing the things you want to read haha. so obviously i dont go here or know the lore but this was such a thrill to read, the visual descriptions of the scene of war, the way you heighten that feeling of threat with the stray risen right in the middle of dialogue! so good! chan and seungkwan would choose a life and death situation as the setup to bicker back and forth wouldn't day? their dynamic really carried me through it, thank you for sharing!<3

"Honeybear! It's time to get up!!"

"Papa, NO."

"Sugglebug, yes."

"Papa, NO."

"Light of my life, Yes."

"PAPA, NO!"

"Sweetcheeks, YES!"

Seungah stepped out of her bedroom into the hall, blanket and teddy clutched in one hand and pouted at him. "Papa, I don't wanna go to school."

"I know you don't," Seokmin said with a half smile, "But I made pancakes and we have freshly squeezed orange juice, does that sound nice?"

"Pancakes with butter and lemon and sugar?"

"Of course, sweetheart, what do you take me for?"

Seungah squeezed her teddy tighter and shuffled down the hall, leaning against his legs and Seokmin rubbed her shoulders. She hated school. Until she got there and then she loved it, loved singing loudly with her friends at break, and calling the teacher to tell her that someone was cheating at maths, and breaking up her snacks to give to the little girl who only ever seemed to have an apple for lunch.

"Ready for breakfast?"

Seungah sighed and nodded, pushing past him into the kitchen and Seokmin smiled. Good.

"Now remember, honey–" Seokmin turned around in the car seat once he'd pulled into the car spot– "Your Appa is going to be picking you up later, alright?"

"Why?"

"Because I have a meeting. He'd going to bring you to the park, alright?"

"Ice-cream?"

"Maybe. Depends if you're good or not, doesn't it?" In a way it did. If her teacher was displeased, she'd probably wrangle sympathy ice-cream off Jeonghan after he gave her a talk, but if she was good she'd probably wrangle reward ice-cream off him. He was ... good to her.

But not necessarily right for her.

But that didn't matter.

Not right now anyway.

"Am I staying over?"

"Would you like to?" Lately, she didn't want to. He knew it was upsetting Jeonghan, but there wasn't much he could do. If she didn't want to stay with him neither of them were ever going to make her.

"Can I stay with Appa tonight? And bring Benny?"

"Of course. I'll drop Benny over later on, okay?"

Seungah nodded. "Okay, Papa."

Sorted then. Seokmin grabbed her bag and opened the doors, holding her hand as she jumped out of the car and threatened to run ahead of him, her tiny plaits bouncing as she hopped on the spot and waited for him to lock the car.

"Papa~"

"Okay, okay, okay, let's go tiny spider."

"Spider? I'm not a spider!"

"Are you a earwig?"

"No!"

"A ladybird?"

"No, Papa!"

"Okay, okay, I know. You're a tiny koala."

"No! I'm Seungah!"

"Oh yes! Of course you are, you're my tiny, weeny, itsy bitsy, Seungah!" Seokmin crouched down to kiss her on the nose as they halted outside her classroom.

Seungah stared at him. "Papa, you're silly."

"I love you lots, tiny thing."

"I love you too, Papa." Seungah nodded decisively and took her school bag off Seokmin before leaning to kiss his cheek and turning to march into her classroom, lilac raincoat disappearing into the mass of excited children. Seokmin didn't envy her teacher. Not one bit.

Jeonghan texted him to say that Seungah had had a smoothie instead of ice cream and that they were making dinner and could she call him later before bed. Seokmin said of course she could, and pocketed his phone, hurrying up the subway steps out onto the main square and dancing his way across the cobblestones to the tiny door in the corner, squeezed between a pharmacy and a convent. He rang the bell.

The door swung open and Soonyoung beamed at him, "Hi! I'm just in before you, come on, up the stairs." He ushered him up two flights of stairs to a landing, and dropped his umbrella and three bags down while he fumbled for the keys.

Seokmin picked up two of the bags, and Soonyoung cheered as he found the key, turned it in the lock and elbowed the door open, grabbing the other bag and his umbrella.

Once they'd put the bags on the counter and shrugged off raincoats, Soonyoung caught Seokmin by the elbows.

"Hi," he smiled the word, cheeks bright and Seokmin leaned forward to touch his nose to his.

"Hi."

Soonyoung smiled wider and pulled him closer, "You look happy."

"I am happy."

Soonyoung hummed and kissed him, gentle but like spring, bright and full of life. Seokmin thought that he could spent a suspended infinity here, in this kitchen, in his arms, tucked between a humming fridge and a dripping tap, with the ice cream slowly melting on the counter and a clock ticking from the bathroom. Soonyoung grinned against his lips and pulled back to press a dozen tiny kisses to the corners of his lips.

"You're happy too." Seokmin kissed.

"Good day at work. One of my patients sang along to the radio, first time I've ever heard her speak. It was amazing."

Seokmin kissed his cheek, "That's brilliant."

"Yeah, we looked up the song, she would have been thirteen and a bit when it came out. Amazing how she knew nearly all the words."

"What songs came out when you were thirteen?"

"Aigoo Seokminnie~" Soonyoung pulled back, "Don't call attention to my age!"

"You're only a year—"

"Are you calling me old! Why, when I was this high to a grasshopper you were—"
Seokmin shook with laughter and pulled Soonyoung closer still, winding his fingers through the belt loops on the back of Soonyoung's slacks and kissing his cheek until Soonyoung stopped and turned to kiss him firmly.

"Dinner."

"Ah, hyung."

"Ah-ah, dinner. You promised me you'd show me how to do asparagus tips."

"I did."

"So I bought them, and crab claws and some cheese? Can you show me how to do that dish you did on TV last week?" Soonyoung pulled away and hurried over to the shopping bags, digging through them to lay everything out on the counter, hopping around the island to grab two aprons and a hairband and pushing his hair away from his face.

"Of course I will, let's put everything away first, the ice cream is melting—"

"Oh shit!"

Soonyoung wasn't the worlds best chef, or the most attentive cook, but Seokmin stood behind him— feeling like a character out of a cheesy book— and guided him to cut and slice and chop and dice the ingredients, talked him through the frying and boiling and simmering, and coaxed him through cleaning the crab claws. Soonyoung winced and squirmed the entire way through but turned to him with the biggest smile when he was finished.

Seokmin's phone rang just as he was setting the table, and he shuffled into the bedroom to take it.

"Hi."

"Hi, Seokmin-ah," Jeonghan always insisted on speaking Korean and sometimes it drove him mad. "Seungah is all ready for bed and she wanted to talk to you, are you free?"

"Of course I am. How is she?"

"Good, she's good. She got a gold star in school, but I'll let her tell you. Seungah-ya? Your Papa is on the phone."

"Hi Papa! How's your meeting?" Seungah switched to English the second she took the phone and Seokmin smiled.

"It's going well, sweet cheeks."

"That's good."

"How was your day, are you enjoying being at Appa's?"

"I caught a frog in school! He was all soft and didn't try to jump away, Minghao said he was scared of me, but Teacher said I was so gentle that he didn't notice he was in my hands."

"Wow, chicken! That's amazing!"

He could hear Seungah nodding, "And I got a gold star for my maths! Teacher said I did 'very well'."

"I'm so proud."

"And Appa made smoothies."

"Did he?"

"With apple and banana and orange and berries, and—" Seungah pulled away from to phone to ask Jeonghan—"yoghurt and ice."

"That sounds really tasty, sweetheart, did you like it?"

"Yes. Appa should make smoothies all the time."

"I'll tell him you said that."

"Good. He should."

"Are you ready for bed?"

"Yeah, Appa did my hair all nice and I washed my teeth and my face and my hands and Appa has Benny—"
Seokmin smiled, squeezing his eyes shut.
"—And I'm in my pyjamas. Good night, Papa."

"Good night, duckie."

"'M not a duck, Papa."

"A chicken?"

"Not a chicken."

"A fishie?"

"Papa! I'm not a fishie!"

"What about a koala bear?"

"Maybe I'm a koala bear." Seungah murmured and Seokmin could hear Jeonghan's amused chuckle.

"I think you are, honey." The words were whispered nearly too quietly for Seokmin to hear.

"Papa, Appa says I'm a koala bear."

"Does he?"

"Yes."

"Well then it must be true."

"Night, Papa."

"Goodnight, my little koala bear." Seokmin hung up and put the phone down. God he hated life sometimes.

"Minnie?"

Seokmin looked up.

"Can I meet her?"

"Yeah," Seokmin blinked back the tears and nodded, "Are you free Saturday?"

"Really? Yes, absolutely, she's going to love me."

"She still doesn't understand, not really. It's been so long and she doesn't get it."

"She sees him, of course its hard for her."

"Not as often as she should," Seokmin stood and shook his head, "Not as often as she should."

"I can just be your friend to her if that's easier? At least for a while."

"I'll think about it? Jeonghan had a date a while back, she didn't find it weird, but she hardly ever reacts the same to both of us. Maybe for a bit? Just a month, no longer."

Soonyoung rocked up onto his toes to kiss his cheek, "Of course. What about the zoo?"

"Picnic?"

"If you make it, absolutely."

"You have to bring the snacks, you're better at snacks."

"A culinary complement from the great chef himself? What is this?" Soonyoung touched the back of his hand to his forehead and fainted into the chair with a smile and Seokmin couldn't help the laughter.

"Let's see what this tastes like and you can have more than a culinary compliment."

"Saucy," Soonyoung sat back up and lifted his glass of rosé, "I like it."

"Chin chin."

"Chin chin!"

Seungah was beyond excited. She spent the morning reciting animals alphabetically ('A is for Ant, Papa, and B is for Baboon, C is for Cat and D is for Dinosaur.' 'I don't think you'll see any dinosaurs, pup—' 'Of course I will.') and had picked out her very favourite skirt to wear on top of her jeans— if she'd picked anything up from her Appa it would have had to be his horrendous fashion taste— with a massive orange hoodie and bright green bobbins for her pigtails.
Seokmin packed the wicker picnic basket into the boot of the car and belted her in with a kiss.

"Do you remember who we're meeting?"

"Papa's ~friend~."

"His name is Soonyoung. Can you remember that?"

Seungah looked at him in offense, "Of course I can, Papa, I'm not a baby."

"Alright sugarplum."

"Let's go!!"

The drive went quickly even with Seungah's constant 'are we there yet' questions, and Seokmin parked the car and opened her door, kneeling in front of her and holding her hands.

"Baby bear? Can you promise me that you'll be nice to Soonyoung? He's a very good friend of mine and he's excited to meet you."

"Can we see the penguins?"

"If you're really good we can go visit the red pandas."

"I'll be good," Seungah nodded her head, "Will Soonyoung like me?"

"Of course he will. You're the most adorable and clever and kind little panda in the world!"

"Papa, I'm not a panda."

"No? What are you?"

"I'm a shark."
Seokmin laughed loudly and Seungah pouted at him, "Papa~"

"I'm sorry sharkling, let's go!"

Soonyoung met them just inside the front gates, stamping his feet in the cold air and patting his mitten clad hands together, looking very much like a penguin in his black raincoat and Seokmin bend down to Seungah's ear.

"See that man there? With the bright purple mittens?"

"The penguin man?"

"Yeah. That's Soonyoung."

Seungah nodded and gripped onto his trousers tightly as Seokmin straightened up. They'd put the picnic basket into a locker to collect later on, so he reached down to take her hand and walk over to him.

"Seokminnie!!!!! Hi! It's so cold!!" Soonyoung beamed at him and then turned to Seungah. "Hi Seungah. Your Papa told me lots about you—"

"Good things?" Seungah turned into Seokmin's leg slightly and Soonyoung nodded.

"Lots of good things. Like how you're a koala, and a panda, and a little wriggly squid—"

"Papa!! I'm not a squid!!"

"I'm sorry—"

Seungah took a step forward, "I'm a shark."

Soonyoung gasped dramatically, "A shark! Oh my goodness, you're so terrifying, Seokmin save me what will I do—"

Seungah giggled and looked at Seokmin, "Papa, he's silly."

"I know, baby bun."

"I like him."

"Do you?"

Seungah nodded, "Let's go see the elephants."

By the time they reached the monkeys, Seungah had abandoned Seokmin and had hitched a ride on Soonyoung's shoulders, tapping his head every now and then to get him to turn around.

"Papa, look!"

"I see sharklet."

Seungah returned to Seokmin when they had their lunch, pushing herself up until she could sit in Seokmin's lap and pull his coat around her, tucking her hands into his pockets and shivering.

"Papa, I'm cold."

"It's really cold isn't it. Do you want to finish looking at the animals or have lunch in the car and go home?"

Seungah looked between him and Soonyoung, "But, but we're meeting Soonyoung?"

"He can come have lunch with us if you'd like?"

Seungah hummed and then nodded, "Sharks don't like the cold. I'm not a polar bear, Papa. To the car!!"

Soonyoung and Seungah got on so well that by the time Soonyoung had to go home, Seungah threw herself at him for a hug.

"Thank you for bringing the snacks!"

"You're very welcome Seungah." Soonyoung hugged her gently and Seungah squeezed tight before pulling away.

"Come again soon?"

"I'd love to. Maybe we can feed the ducks?"

"With peas! Not bread, cause Papa says ducks don't like bread."

Soonyoung smiled, eyes crackling up and his whole face beaming. "Of course."

Seokmin stepped out of the car to say goodbye, feeling brave enough to squeeze in a tiny kiss and Soonyoung smiled against his lips.
"I love her."

"I love you."

"Safe home, Minnie."

"Text me?"

"Of course I will."

And then he was gone, and Seokmin sat back into the car.
"Ready to go home?"

"Papa?" Seungah started and Seokmin turned. She had a grin as big as a banana on her face, "Are you and Soonyoung penguins?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are you gonna stay together for ever and ever and keep be between your feet?"

He had such a perceptive daughter.
"Maybe, sharklet. What do you think?"

"I like him. He gives nice hugs and he's funny."

"I'm glad you like him."

"He can call me sharklet too." Seungah said finally and turned to look out the window.

Well, that had gone exceedingly well.

Minghao’s back is turned to the stage when polite applause follows the announcement of a performance by Diana Kim, fixed on the target fifteen feet away. She has no chance at parting the crowd around Choi Seungcheol and it’s not tonight’s objective either; it’s simple reconnaissance. There’s a breathless hello as the band starts up, a jazzy number kicking off after a whispered refrain. It paints the room gold in joy, Diana starts singing, and Minghao’s blood moves through her body like slush through a garden hose in winter. She spins on her heel—Junhui’s amused snort in her ear—and that’s all the confirmation she needs.

The last time Minghao had seen Seokmin, she’d picked out a bullet from Minghao’s arm with surgical precision, tongue out between her lips, and stitched Minghao up. The pain had knocked Minghao out and she’d woken up in an empty safehouse, with only the lingering scent of Seokmin’s perfume as a reminder Seokmin was by her side and not some bloodied, haggard shade picked from her memory. That had been six months ago.

It’s not like Seokmin disappeared off the face of the earth; Minghao would wake up to presents occasionally. A bottle of Baccarat Rouge 540 on the doorstep of her loft alongside a postcard from Paris, signed with the bright stamp of a lipsticked kiss. An antique diamond necklace from some countess' collection, and a headline the following day. Once, an original Monet that Minghao does not want to know the story behind.

(It hangs over her bed.)

This, Seokmin on stage, feels like one of those gifts: presented carefully with the edge of a threat, a razor embedded into the tube of her lipstick. Seokmin looks stunning, her dress a brilliant azure that puts the Santorini sky to shame, off the shoulder and flowing over her figure like a sheet of water, a high slit up her right leg. Minghao has heard her sing twice—both times in the shower—but this is incomparable, her voice clear as crystal, a siren’s song, encouraging heartbreak to follow.

“Recon’s over for the night huh?” Junhui chips in Minghao’s earpiece. “Stay safe.”

Minghao can’t even snap back at Junhui to defend herself because he’s right.

Seokmin doesn’t meet her eyes through the set—three songs—and Minghao is left wondering how much of it is genuine and how much of it is a game. Seokmin holds the last high note, the crowd erupts into genuine applause, and meets Minghao’s eyes with a smirk, satisfaction dripping from her ruby red lips.

Here is what Minghao has learnt about Seokmin: you must allow her to come to you. Press too hard, too fast and she draws into herself, holding you at a polite distance with all the frigidity of a tundra between you, if you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, Seokmin’s bite is harsher than her bark, a knife slipped between your third and fourth rib with a brilliant smile.

Minghao withdraws to one of the open balconies, patient as Seokmin weaves through the crowd—her dress is apparently backless—drawing even the attention of Seungcheol himself. It’s still reconnaissance if she’s watching Seokmin easily drawing a gummy smile from Seungcheol, the way he trips over himself to assure her, his flickering gaze between her hand on his arm and her tongue over her lips as she speaks animatedly. Minghao doesn’t miss the disappointment when he asks her something and she replies, probably turning down an invitation to spend the night with him.

When Seokmin finally comes to Minghao, she takes a moment to inhale the scent that follows Seokmin: sage and sea salt.

“My love,” Seokmin smiles, stepping into Minghao’s space, reaching out. Minghao pulls her in—the moon reflecting the light of the sun—threading the fingers of her left hand with Seokmin’s right, her right going to the small of Seokmin’s back.

Seokmin giggles, and all of Minghao’s training goes out of the door, any pretense at neuroticism shattered like a hammer to glass. “May I have this dance?” Minghao asks.

“And if I say no?” Seokmin whispers.

“Wouldn’t be the first time you’ve denied me,” Minghao shoots back. Seokmin laughs, throwing her hand back with it and Minghao wants to drag her mouth along the line of her neck, map her body like a cartographer consumed by the discovery of a new continent.

It’s almost picturesque; Minghao with a beautiful woman in her arms, dancing to the strains of an orchestra as the sun dips below the horizon. It’s almost close to love, too; Minghao and Seokmin drift apart and come back together and drift apart and come back together, it is almost bedrock in it’s certainty.

“You look good, your haircut is nice,” Seokmin compliments, the hand on her shoulder moving to the nape of Minghao’s neck. Her touch feels like a live wire against bare skin. “I haven’t seen your ears in so long, it’s cute.”

Minghao wills herself not to blush but her body is always traitorous in the presence of Seokmin, ears burning. Seokmin’s smile turns into something softer, tracing the shell of Minghao’s ear. The Seokmin you see is the Seokmin you get—gentle, charismatic, the black hole at the center of the universe everyone hurtles towards—it’s the Seokmin you don’t see that you should be worried about. It’s Seokmin leg around Minghao’s hip as Minghao dips her at the crescendo of the song, miles of tan skin, the coy smile she shoots Minghao when her hands stray too high and finds the edge of a holster strapped around Seokmin’s thigh.

The tension between them is so thick it’s in their lungs, a tangible weight like disembarking a plane in Singapore, the first drag of air into your lungs after hours of recycled, climate-controlled air. Minghao’s hand goes higher, hiking up Seokmin’s dress with it, fingers skating over the cool blade, Seokmin’s eyes boring into hers.

When they kiss, it’s like the rebound of an elastic band; two people stretched too thin with want they snap back together. Seokmin’s mouth on her is desperate as Minghao rights them both, crowding Minghao against the balustrade, hands already under Minghao’s suit jacket, too impatient to bother with unbuttoning it. Minghao pulls away and Seokmin follows, the lowest whine under her breath.

“Not here,” Minghao says firmly, tugging Seokmin’s hands away.

They manage to weave through the crowd, pausing only for Seokmin to throw a flirtatious wink over her shoulder when Seungcheol catches sight of her ruined lipstick and rumpled dress. He looks heartbroken, and Minghao is probably too smug as they trip over each other in their haste to get to Minghao’s hotel room.

The night passes in a blur, against the cool surface of a mirror, against the down of the bed, time slowing down to molasses and Seokmin’s cry of Minghao’s name.

When Minghao wakes it is slow, gradual, dreams dissolving like cotton candy on the tip of her tongue; only to flinch into awareness when her fingers glide along a blade rather than a body. Minghao sits up, sheets pooling around her waist, Seokmin’s side of the bed still warm.

Let it be said that Seokmin is generous, leaving behind gifts for Minghao. Seokmin’s lipstick is smeared across the mirror— from where Minghao had pinned her against it and kissed her neck—a deep burgundy. Seokmin’s perfume lingers over the sheets like they’ve been laundered in it—and Seokmin can be petty enough to spray her perfume over Minghao’s sheets—sage and sea salt. Seokmin’s dagger—one of them at least, is in place of her body in Minghao’s bed—excessively ornate.

Minghao has shown her hand. It's Seokmin's move again, Minghao waiting for an answer.

the fact that seokmin lies somewhere between the axis of backless monica bellucci and villanelle pinning eve to the bed makes me want to scream like you have no idea...

AHH I've never played Fire Emblem but you painted this AU so well... I felt like I was /there/ I could see the action. This line was like a hammer to my heart: Chan would never admit it now but maybe if things were better and they had the free time to give speeches about who they looked up to, Chan would call Seungkwan his hero. - are you kidding!! and then Seungkwan's decision!! you captured their rivals-but-I-would-die-for-you energy perfectly and I loved this sooo much, thank you T.T

typing this on my phone so its horribly disjointed but i will try my best to scream at u!!!!!! GOD DIA WHEN I RECEIVED THIS IN MY INBOX I SCREECHED!!!! BOND GIRL SEOKMIN!!!!!!!!!! women just do it better .

i don’t think ive ever told u how much i love ur writing, im so glad i found u (and as fellow cutie gathering im extra thank u for driving me insane on the tl) <3 it makes me feel very feral in the best way bc u always write things so tenderly and full of bright sharp things.

particularly lines i enjoyed:
- with only the lingering scent of Seokmin’s perfume as a reminder Seokmin was by her side and not some bloodied, haggard shade picked from her memory.
????!?!?!?!??!!??!!!!!! the imagery is insane how do u come up with these...
- Minghao has heard her sing twice—both times in the shower i found this so brilliant . to build a relationship with so few words ... rly gave me insight as to who seokmin is (might’ve been / could be) to minghao, the intimacy of it all...
- not to be Me but seungcheol being jipped by seokmin again!!! thats the homecoming perseokhao teas It’s almost close to love, too; Minghao and Seokmin drift apart and come back together and drift apart and come back together, it is almost bedrock in it’s certainty. DEVOTION AND MARRIAGE do u know how beautiful and incredibly sexy ur venn diagram is to me. i actually . ascended and saw god for a moment it was defined so clearly and At Last I See the Light. the idea that it will always be seokmin and minghao makes me T_____T theres nothing more tender than knowing with surety that someone is the right person for u, and that every time, they will choose u (and u, them).
- The Seokmin you see is the Seokmin you get—gentle, charismatic, the black hole at the center of the universe everyone hurtles towards—it’s the Seokmin you don’t see that you should be worried about YEAH LET SEOKMIN BE SEXY 2K21!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

god this fill was delicious in every sense of the word it felt both dangerous and tender and reminded me of red roses . i think the world of ur seokmin and im so glad u decided to take the bait that i dangled in front of u . i got u right back :))) thank u for sharing!

i've recently been opening my eyes to junhuism and i'm so glad 8jun were able to come across like this to u ;___; (and just all the dynamics ee i was really glad they were conveyed well despite the little wc) and to be honest reading this The way Seokmin must be beaten physically + Minghao must be beaten mentally, in order to gain their dual respect, is so clever. made my jaw drop i wasn't even thinking of this in that way asjdhfkaj i just knew minghao had to be one to be convinced (seokmin in it from the get go), as the seokhao jaegar pilot dynamic (one leads w/ the head, the other his heart) . i'm so glad u pointed it out though AAAA

thank u for reading n enjoying!!!!!!! <3

u already know how much i absolutely adore u but i will say it again: i do love u so!!!! and if u haven't watched pacrim yet i really want to suggest u do, if not solely for the concept of Having Another Person Truly Understand You, Body and Soul and Mind. so much love to be found there ;__;

can i just say that was my most favorite line to write oh my god. BEST TROPE is still childhood friends to lovers (which seokhao are in this universe) but there's something delicious about enemies/rivals to begrudging teammates to someone i would not hesitate to die for in a heartbeat!!! its so neat!!! THANK U FOR READING
