Round 2: Alternate Universes
About
Is there a piece of media that has gripped your heart and lives in your head rent free? Do you like the dynamics of 007/Q or a Sentinel/Guide AU? Maybe its the aesthetics of Song of Achilles or Secret Histories — or maybe its your other fandoms (F1 and Anime girlies looking at you). Get our your media roundups and put our favourite boys into a new world.
We've seen it all here: Raven Cycle, In The Mood For Love, Hamlet, Filipino mythology, and (squints at writing on hand) dilf? Yes we confirm there was a dilf AU. Now lets see what 2023 brings.

Press tours are Jeonghan’s least favorite part of being an actor. He doesn’t like the rushing back and forth between hotels and answering the same questions over and over again, he doesn’t like the invasiveness either. Being asked about his diet, or his relationship with his coworkers– he doesn’t want to answer any of those questions. He wishes he could just shoot the movie and go home, and he wouldn’t have to go out again until the premier, and maybe for award shows, if the movie does well.
But he has to. There’s no way out of it. And really, this time, it’s not so bad– his costars are nice. Some of them he knew from acting school, and some of them were new friends. And then there was Kim Mingyu.
Mingyu is… well, Jeonghan tries not to think about it.
They’d met once, at a party. They’d hooked up in the bathroom and never talked or saw each other again until they walked onto set and saw each other, eyes widening in recognition. Whatever that is, whatever that means– that’s what Mingyu is.
It’s not as awkward as you might think. Jeonghan sort of wishes it was awkward– he’d know what to do with that. Instead it’s nice, comfortable. Mingyu is responsive and playful, he likes to bicker with Jeonghan over small things and to whine, and Jeonghan finds it amusing to poke fun at him and tease him. They’re like that.
They haven’t talked about the time they hooked up. What can they do, anyways? Neither of them are out publicly, and realistically, they’re never going to be.
Jeonghan looks away from the car window he’d been looking out of and over at Mingyu, who’s sitting on a seat in front of him and to the left. He can see his profile, the slope of his nose. Mingyu’s laughing at something Seokmin said. Then he seems to sense Jeonghan’s eyes on him, and he turns to look back at him, raising an eyebrow.
“What is it, hyung?” Mingyu asks.
“Nothing,” Jeonghan replies in a sing-songy voice, smiling. “Are you nervous for the first stop?”
“A little,” Mingyu says. “But not that much. I like press tours. It’s fun getting to talk to so many people.”
Jeonghan chuckles, shaking his head. Yeah. Mingyu would think that.
“What?” Mingyu says, feigning hurt. “Don’t laugh at me!”
“I’m not,” Jeonghan says. “We’re just so different, aren’t we?”
“Are we?”
“I hate press tours.”
“Oh,” Mingyu says. Then he grins. “Wanna make a bet, hyung?”
“Depends,” Jeonghan says. “What on?”
“That I can make you like press tours.”
Jeonghan scoffs, “alright. Sure. It’s your money you’re wasting.”
“How much? 25,000 won?”
“Deal,” Jeonghan says.
Mingyu sticks out a hand, and they shake on it.
…
After the press interview, which was slightly more bearable than usual, is over, they’re back in the car on the way to their hotel. Mingyu and Jeonghan sit next to each other in the back seat this time, Seokmin the front. He’s scrolling through his phone, and suddenly laughs, and reaches out behind him, sticking his phone into Jeonghan’s hand.
“Hyung, look at this post,” Seokmin says, still grinning.
“What is it?” Jeonghan asks, mildly curious.
“It’s about you and Mingyu,” Seokmin replies.
Mingyu perks up next to him, leaning over to look at the screen with Jeonghan.
Yoon Jeonghan and Kim Mingyu’s two shot is out
F*ck, it’s f*cking goodㅋㅋㅋㅋ Their visual combination is crazy, and they freaking match their characters. I’m looking forward to the movie even more now…
[+1242, -103]
[+957, -50] Just looking at their faces, you can tell their chemistry is goodㅋㅋ They sort of have that puppy and kitty vibe?ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
[+939, -26] Crazy, what’s up with Kim Mingyu’s body? Just how tall is he?? Yoon Jeonghan is tall too, so it’s even more fascinating seeing their size differenceㅋㅋ
[+829, -23] I’m just a fan of Yoon Jeonghan, but seeing how well people are reacting, they must indeed freaking match the characters from the webtoonㅋㅋㅋㅋ
[+782, -28] The webtoon was f*cking good, and seeing how well the casting director did, I’m f*cking excited for the movie.
[+741, -18] The top comment f*ckㅋㅋㅋ If you’d read the webtoon, you’d know that their characters too have that puppy and kitty vibeㅋㅋ This casting was seriously a blessing.
“Wow, hyung,” Mingyu says. “We’re popular.”
“Kitty? Are they calling me a cat?” Jeonghan huffs, handing the phone back to Seokmin.
“You are sort of cat-like,” Mingyu says seriously.
Jeonghan rolls his eyes. “Brat.”
“You’re just annoyed because you had fun at the press tour stop.”
“I did not.”
“Sure, hyung. Whatever you say.”
Jeonghan shoves Mingyu in the ribs, making him laugh– they’re interrupted before it can escalate, however, as the manager driving the car speaks up.
“There was a mess up with the bookings for the hotel rooms,” she says. “Seokmin-ssi, you’ll have a room to yourself, but Mingyu-ssi and Jeonghan-ssi will have to share.”
“What?” Jeonghan says, blinking. “Are you serious?”
“What’s up with that reaction?” Mingyu says. “I’m not that bad, am I?”
Jeonghan’s mouth opens and closes, stupidly, as he tries to think of something– anything– to say. Something to convey how it’s not Mingyu, but his own fault, how it’s him that can’t do this, but nothing comes out.
In the end he just shakes his head, sighs, and shrugs. Mingyu gives him a look, but doesn’t confront him about it. He probably will later.
Before they go up to their rooms, the director invites them out for a cast dinner to celebrate the start of the press tour, and the soon to come opening weekend of the movie. Mingyu and Jeonghan end up sitting across from each other, while Seokmin sits on Jeonghan’s right, and one of the actresses, Choi Yoona, sits on the other.
Jeonghan bites back a frown when she sits down next to him, her thigh brushing against his. She smiles at him apologetically, although she definitely did it on purpose.
The food arrives and so does the alcohol, and soon everyone’s a little tipsy– the atmosphere is nice. They chat about the movie, upcoming schedules, things like that. Jeonghan is tired, and more than anything, he just wants to go to his room and take a shower and sleep. But he should at least make an attempt at being sociable, he supposes.
Someone nudges his foot under the table, and Jeonghan looks up to see Mingyu looking at him imploringly.
“What?” Jeonghan asks, his tone unnecessarily defensive.
“Are you alright, hyung?” Mingyu says, quietly. Jeonghan can barely hear him over the noise of everyone else talking.
“I’m fine,” Jeonghan says. “Just tired,” he adds, when Mingyu opens his mouth as if to argue.
Mingyu still doesn’t look very convinced, but he lets it go. Suddenly there’s a weight on Jeonghan’s right side, and he turns his head to see Yoona laughing, pressing up against Jeonghan’s side and clapping her hands. He doesn’t want to be rude, so he lets her– but when she stops laughing, he tries to gently push her off him.
“Jeonghan oppa!” She whines, giving him a playful shove. Jeonghan stares at her blankly. “Why are you being so cold tonight?”
“Yoona-ssi,” Jeonghan says. “Sunbaenim will do fine.”
“Ah, you’re too cold!” She laughs. “Why can’t I call you oppa?”
“Because I’m not comfortable with it,” Jeonghan says. “It’s nothing personal. I just like to keep a professional relationship with the people I work with.”
“But Mingyu oppa calls you ‘hyung’,” Yoona says, pointing a finger at Mingyu, who’s staring at her like he’s trying to set her on fire with his mind. “Isn’t that personal too?”
“That’s not the same,” Jeonghan says. “Mingyu is… my friend.”
“Yoona,” another actress, Saeyoung, calls out. “Come sit with me. You need to drink some water.”
Yoona whines, but obliges, getting off her chair and walking down to join her friend. Jeonghan shoots Saeyoung a grateful look, and she nods, giving him a smile.
“I think I’m gonna head to bed,” Jeonghan announces, standing up too.
“Already, hyung?” Seokmin asks.
“Mhm,” Jeonghan replies. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Seokmin-ah.”
“I’ll come with you,” Mingyu says suddenly, getting up. “We only have one keycard, right?”
Jeonghan blinks at him, then nods vaguely, “yeah. Let’s go.”
They walk up to their room in silence. Jeonghan’s mind is far away, and he keeps running a hand up and down his right arm, shifting uncomfortably in his clothes.
Once inside the room, Jeonghan stops, staring.
“Oh,” Mingyu says. “There’s only one bed.”
“Good one, Sherlock.”
Mingyu doesn’t reply, just walks further into the room, opening up his luggage. “Do you want to take a shower first?” He asks.
Jeonghan considers which one would be worse, and eventually decides, “I’ll go first.”
“Alright.”
Jeonghan stares at Mingyu unblinkingly for a few seconds before shaking his head and grabbing something to sleep in from his bag and going into the bathroom. He hadn’t responded to the teasing at all. His expression now was cold, and sort of distant.
He turns the water on as hot as it’ll go before stepping in, letting it scald him, hoping it’ll help. What exactly he wants it to help with he isn’t sure about, but something– something has to help, right? Jeonghan hopes Yoona was so drunk that she won’t remember any of it tomorrow. She was nice enough, but she obviously has a crush on him, and he can’t reciprocate it, and he can’t tell her why.
He gets out of the shower and dries off, changes into his sleep clothes, and walks back into the room, and he finds Mingyu– Mingyu, lying on the bed, their shared bed, without a shirt on. Oh, for fucks sake.
Jeonghan throws his towel at him, “put a shirt on, for god’s sake.”
“It’s too hot in here,” Mingyu replies, throwing the towel into a chair. “Sorry, Sunbaenim. I’ll put a shirt on after the shower.”
“Wh– Mingyu?”
Mingyu doesn’t reply, just stalks off and shuts the bathroom door behind him. What?
Jeonghan tries to shrug it off, he shakes his head, and he gets into bed on the side opposite of where Mingyu had been laying. He stares up at the ceiling unseeingly. He tries to fall asleep so he won’t have to talk to Mingyu when he gets out of the shower, but it doesn’t work. He should’ve showered last. Maybe that would’ve helped more.
After 20 minutes, Mingyu comes back out. He’s wearing a shirt. Jeonghan sits up straight in the bed, staring at Mingyu imploringly, like he’d been looking at Jeonghan at dinner earlier.
Mingyu doesn’t say anything. He dries his hair with the towel before throwing it in the chair with Jeonghan’s, and then he sits down on his side of the bed, his back to Jeonghan.
“Mingyu,” Jeonghan says.
“What?” Mingyu replies.
“What’s wrong with you?” Jeonghan asks.
Mingyu scoffs. “I’m trying to keep things professional.”
“It’s a bit late for that, don’t you think?” Jeonghan says.
“I don’t know,” Mingyu says. He turns around to look at Jeonghan. “Is it? It’s not like you’ve made any inclination that you wanted more from me than a ‘professional work relationship’, is it?”
“Mingyu,” Jeonghan says. “Mingyu.”
“What is it, sunbae–”
“Stop calling me that.”
“What do you want, then?”
“I don’t understand,” Jeonghan replies, sort of desperately. “I don’t understand. Why are you being like this? Just… just call me hyung, and… and be like you were before.”
“You’re confusing me,” Mingyu replies, shaking his head. “You’re being mean, hyung.”
“Mean?”
“I’m not just some stupid dog who’ll follow you around everywhere, you know. I have feelings.”
“What?”
“At first, I thought maybe you’d forgotten me. Maybe you forgot we hooked up, that we’d even met at all– but you did act familiar with me, and you let me call you hyung, so I thought– I don’t know, I guess I just… I thought we had something. But apparently you think we’re just… friends,” Mingyu says the word with distaste. “Do you even like boys? Or was I just an experiment to you?”
Jeonghan feels like someone’s just thrown him out of a moving car. Now he’s hurtling down the side of a mountain, falling, falling, falling.
“Am I crazy?” Mingyu asks. “Is this not what you want? I thought it was. But now I…”
“You’re not– fuck, Mingyu, you’re not crazy,” Jeonghan replies.
“Okay,” Mingyu says. “Okay, I’m not crazy. And you did want me, but you don’t anymore. That’s fine. We’ll pretend this never happened.”
“No,” Jeonghan says. “No, I don’t want to pretend– I don’t want that.”
“Then what do you want? Could you just… Can you just tell me?”
Jeonghan stares back at him, insides churning. There’s a word he knows, but he can’t say it. Instead he shuffles forward, so he’s sitting next to Mingyu on the bed. He takes Mingyu’s face in his hands.
Mingyu looks desperate for something, something which he knows the word for, but can’t say.
“I want to kiss you,” Jeonghan says. “Can I?”
“What else?” Mingyu says. “What else do you want?”
“Mingyu, don’t–”
“Please, hyung,” Mingyu says.
Jeonghan takes a deep shuddering breath, closing his eyes. He lets his forehead bump into Mingyu’s and lets it rest there. “Dammit, Mingyu.”
“I need to know. I’m tired of feeling like I’m going crazy, like I’m imagining things. I think… I deserve to know.”
“You do,” Jeonghan replies, softly. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I should’ve told you, but I was scared. We… I… I’m not out to anyone, not really. There was a guy in highschool, and then you, and… no one else. And with our jobs…”
“We can keep it secret,” Mingyu whispers. “I can keep a secret. If you just asked me to, I would.”
“You shouldn’t be a secret. You’re too good to be someone’s secret.”
“Not if it’s you. Not if I’m yours.”
“Fuck,” Jeonghan mutters. “Fuck, okay. Okay. I want you. I want to kiss you, and everything else– everything else can stay the same. I liked how we were. But I want to kiss you too. And more than that, if you want.”
Mingyu surges forward, kissing Jeonghan hard, laying him down on the bed and sinking into him, and Jeonghan– feels like a flower bursting into bloom. He unfurls under Mingyu, is undone and put back together as they kiss, and kiss, and kiss– as Mingyu pulls his shirt off and removes his own, as skin meets skin.
Jeonghan wakes up the next morning and realizes he owes Mingyu 25,000 won.

it's not not bastardized ryden that i wrote in under an hour while looping fob songs. be thankful if that means nothing to you.

There is a sympathetic lens to every story. What goes around mutates into mythology. That will follow you to the grave despite.
What dies with you alone, however, is the truth.
Seungcheol doesn't think he ever wants to be forgiven.
***
It's like this:
He was 18 when they met, barely that. Full of too much energy and needed to put it somewhere. Wonwoo is younger and starry-eyed, but he's sure of himself. Seungcheol is older and hyperactive and driven by his desire to be loved.
He is five months into writing and working and singing Wonwoo's songs when he knows it. Seungcheol is loved here. Everything after happens quickly.
He's 19 the first time they're given a budget beyond their dreams. Wonwoo puts his heart and soul and sleep schedule on the line with words too biographical woven into tapestries of lyrics Seungcheol's mouth can barely pronounce.
They're on tour with bands Wonwoo had plastered on their tiny practice room walls. Seungcheol is singing the words, "Let's get these teen hearts beating faster," against Wonwoo's mouth damn near every night, and something clicks into place.
Slotted lips, slotted hips—
Freshly 20 years old when he's stepping into view in baggage claim and their arms are around each other.
(Opposite coasts. Matching heartbeats. Put another X on the calendar.)
It's all bliss and romance until Seungcheol puts his fist into the wall and Wonwoo lets the door slam behind him.
If the world is a broken bone, every piece of Seungcheol is fractured.
***
A pop star asks him point blank in a music show dressing room, minutes after showing off a broken clock tattoo etched into the inside of her arm.
(Seungcheol can still feel his breath there. "You need to tell the label that we want to scrap the concept," Wonwoo says. "We're going barebones, not bombastic.")
"We're all too smart to talk to God," she recites with a smile. Gahyeon is terrifying.
"Sunbaenim, if I'm overstepping," she pauses, though everything about her stance suggests she'd push forward were it not for Seungcheol's ramrod posture.
"We wanted different things." Seungcheol wanted to ride it out until the end. Wonwoo wanted integrity, to be true to himself. The same thing in the end, depending on who you speak to.
"Hm," Gahyeon accepts the lukewarm answer, though she puts her number into his phone. "I'd love to get to know you better, sunbae."
Seungcheol crawls out of the corner.
***
He calls it a "side project" but Wonwoo leaves the label and makes a statement. He also takes Hansol with him.
Scabs and vices fill his place.
"I feel like I'm playing pretend up there," is what he tells the label. The beer can in his hand has gone warm, and his in-ears are swinging loose. "None of these songs are mine."
"But one day they will be," they assure him. The crowds come to see Seungcheol breakdown more than they come to Seungcheol sing.
("I know the world's a broken bone, but melt your headaches—oh god. I'm so sorry.")
***
The earth spins and Seungcheol moves a world away, then grows tired and moves back home.
He's at a housewarming of a friend of a friend of a friend when someone steers him into the other room. All of the windows are open, and the summer heat drifts in like a heady cloud.
"You have to meet this guy," they're drunk and laughing, spilling their glass across the new carpet. "He's a little melancholy, but he's just like you."
"Hi," Wonwoo says when Seungcheol steps into view.
(Hey moon, don't you fall down.)
There is something funny about their glasses frames being the same shape, their haircuts nearly the same. What else hasn't changed?
"Hi."

—panic! at the disco was formed before brendon urie (seungcheol is his stand-in here); brendon joined and became the singer
—ryan ross (wonwoo) was the primary lyricist
—lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off ("let's get these teen hearts beating faster, faster")
—bonus: ryan and brendon uhhhh. on stage. they seem like good friends.
—ryden seattle lore where ryan allegedly left his girlfriend's birthday party to be with brendon in seattle and a fan took a pic with them at a restaurant. contentious if this is fact or fiction.
—the calendar ("put another X on the calendar, summer's on its deathbed")
—pretty. odd. (panic! at the disco's second studio album) was conceptualized as a sgt. pepper's-inspired album and was a huge tonal shift from their first vegas/palahniuk-inspired "a fever you can't sweat out"
—the panic! split
—pop star is essentially halsey, A Known Ryden
—"behind the sea" is what gahyeon quotes to him, here is the ryan version (which people feel was more in line with his vision and the cause of the split)
—people thought ryan's new project's song "change" was about brendon
—"There's a line in ["Northern Downpour"] that goes, 'I know the world's a broken bone, but melt your headaches, call it home.' I told Brendon Urie to pay special attention to that line."
——it is a Stunning song
——brendon cries in linked performance and it is once of the final performances of that song.
————ryan has said as of <3 years ago that he still finds "northern downpour" to be a special song.
——————fans find it particularly Ship-Coded because above seattle lore and "I missed your skin when you were east"
—ryan and brendon were seen at the same halloween party in 2015
